Preamp Deal of the Century

If anyone is looking for a true "World Class" preamp at a very fair price..heed my advice. I just recieved a Supratek Syrah preamp that was hand built by Mick Maloney in Western Australia, and it is absolutely beautiful! This preamp is the best deal you will ever find. I would put it up against any preamp out there for both looks and sound. Price? $2500 for the Syrah (includes Killer Phono stage). Not into phono? Try the Chardonney line stage for $2100. Don't get me wrong, I am not associated with this company. I am just a very happy owner! This preamp is VERY dynamic, yet liquid. It conveys the sound of music better than any other preamp that I have ever heard! You can check out the Supratek website at www. cantech.net.au

Need some more info on the Chardonnay...

1. Does anyone have a picture of it? Can you share it (or, if you prefer, send me by e-mail)? What about the remote, is there any picture avaliable?
2. The goal is to match it with a Plinius SA-102 power amp. I am concerned (since I am not able to listen to it) with how they work together. The Plinius specs are Input Sensitivity: 0.8V RMS for rated output at 1kHz. Input Impedance: 47k Ohms. Would like to have your comments on this.

Thanks!
Hi there

A month ago, I ordered a Chardonnay for myself. I've found lots of problems to transfer the money to Mick's account in Australia. In short, I've lost about US$150. I told Mick about it. His answer:

"$150!!!!!!!!! You are getting ripped off - I would demand an investigation. If you dont get it back I will go half and deduct $75 from price."

Nice. Once again, Mick proved to be truly unique within this audio business. Thanks for that.
Hey, can anyone share a backside picture (big enough) of a SUPRATEK preamp (if possible with XLR outputs)? I need to know how Supratek inputs (RCA) and outputs (RCA + XLR) are organized. Where they stand and if they are placed right & left or up & down, etc. A drawing would be perfect also. Thanks!

Talked to Mick a couple of weeks ago and yes, you can use a learning universal remote. I think I'll do that. The TV plastic remote is looks ugly and cheap. Anyone aware of a learning universal remote with a minimalist (just a few buttons) and cool design?
Hi guys

I am getting VERY curious with this 6F6g thing. I am willing to try a pair in my Chardonnay. But what about the brands? Any suggestion? Tung-Sol, Ken-Rad, Sylvania...

Best,
Lisbon

First, the Tung-Sols:

I am not an expert (far from that) on NOS tubes. Started with the stock tubes, then the Sylvanias VT-231 and now (since today!) the Tung-Sols Round Plates. The Sylvanias were airy (nice) but sounded lean and clinical in my Chardonnay. Actually, not too different from the stock tubes. But quite more expensive and microphonic. Sold them. With the Tung-Sols I had a very bad start while ago. Once I put them on the preamp they started to make some "huuummm...". When I got near them the "huuummm..." turned out to be a much louder "HUUUMMM...". Ouch! Well, I gave them a couple of minutes to settle down and the noise disapeared almost completely (!) As for the sound, it is quite the opposite of the Syls. A bit less airy (can I "fix" that with the 6F6G?...) but everything else was much better. Natural highs and lows and a palpable midrange. This is a very musical, very emotional tube. I guess I am done with 6SN7 type.

Now the 6F6G:

First of all, THANK YOU Eccletique and Bwhite! I guess I can get a pair of Sylvania Green base print 6F6G tubes. But I must confess that after my experience with the Syls VT-231 - regading sonics AND specially microphonics - I do not feel very confortable to go again with the Syls... So I ask: are these really good? How do they behave as for tight bass / sweet highs / air AND microphonics (comparing to the stock KT-66)?

Thanks guys!

Fiddler has a point. Did some research on 6F6G and also found nothing saying that these could replace the 5881/KT-66/(...). Also the supratek "manual" does not mention the 6F6G as a possible substitute for the stock tubes (while other types are referred). As Fiddfler "I am foaming at the mouth to try the 6F6g. I just need a little reassurance that the tube will perform within acceptable operating points for the Supratek!" In the meantime, anyone asked Mich about this?
Thank you Eccletique for sharing some more tecnhnical information with us. I do feel safer now and I will try a pair 6F6G in my Chardonnay.

For those who already tried the 6F6G I would like to know a bit more as for sound. How do they compare with (1) stock KT-66 and (2) Tung-Sol 5881 as for:

tight bass (less boomy)
sweet highs (less sibilant)
emotional presentation (instead of clinical)
air

Thanks once more.

Hi again guys

Acording to the previous messages it seems that the 6F6G influences bass more than everything else. It gets deeper and stronger - correct? Well, I really do not need MORE bass. But TIGHTER bass would be much apreciated. Can you be a more specific on the bass improvement using 6F6G comparing to stock tubes and/or Tung-Sol 5881?

On 02-24-04 I asked this question and a couple more. I really need a word of advise here so I will ask again:

Thank you very much.

Supratek ownwers, please take a look at this thread: http://forum.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/fr.pl?aamps&1100096116&read&3&4&

Thanks.
Hi to all

Long time has passed since ny last post. Why? Beacuse, ever since I got my Supratek (Chardonnay), I stopped worrying with audio improvement. Yes, it is that good!

The problem now is that every time I switch on the preamp extremely loud noises come form my speakers. You can actually see the woofers banging. Anyone experienced this? Any solution?

I am trying to solve this problem along with Mick (by e-mail). But I'm afraid I'll have to sent the preamp back to get it fixed. Otherwise my speakers can get damaged for life in no time.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Best regards,
Lisbon
Thanks for answering.

I am turning on the system exactly as I always did. CD on. Preamp on. Power amp on. The power amp takes about ten seconds to go AND after that it stays automatically muted for security reasons. Nice. Then I unmute the power amp and everything goes well. But not now. So let me try to explain... (you know, English is not my mother tongue - sorry if my explanation is not clear)

When I unmute the power amp (after doing all I refered to above) these EXTREMELY loud noises come into scene (with the volume turned down). I imediatly mute it again. Switch off the preamp. Switch back on. Unmute the power amp again and everything goes well (actually, yesterday it was not that easy - needed to turn the preamp off and on almost for 10 times...).

So something is really wrong and I am naturally concerned. For the preamp and above all for my speakers.

If you or anyone have had the same experience (or simple suggestions) please do not hesitate to drop a line here. Thank you in advance.

* other than that, the preamp sounds wonderful.
Problem solved. My Tung-Sols VT-231 were the cause of all that noise. Back to stock tubes and got pure silence. Thanks to all of you who tryed to help. Best, Lisbon.
