Asa, Eccletique & Bwhite,
Thanks so much for all of the incredibly well articulated help. As a result, I am off to see the tube Wizard and take advantage of your collective advice. I will let you know where I land and how it all turns out.
Now that I seem to be in the tube business, I am thinking it would be wise to own a tube tester. Can any one weigh in on what would be the best tester to get ?
Thanks to all !

Has anyone rolled the regulator tubes (6L6EH's) that come with the Cortese ?
I was told that rolling the 2 regulators does not make much (if any) difference in the sound of the Cortese. Has anyone had great success in changing out the stock 6L6EH's and if so, what sonic changes did you hear and what tube yielded the best results ?
I have had some fantastic results with Neotron (NOS) 6SN7's and a GZ34 in place of the 2 6N6P's & the 5AR4 that Mick included. Both cost a fortune, but what difference. The sound is just spectacular. I loved my Cortese before the addition of these 3 new tubes and now itÂs just beyond Heaven to sit down and listen. |
Asa, Thanks for your quick answer. - It's a big help.
Any clues on the best place to hunt up a pair of NOS WE350B's, WE 300VB's or Tungsol Brown Base 5881's ? If you were going to pick one of the group to start with, which one would you pick ?
I was told that the Neotron's are TungSol round plates. They are a French labeled product with the word Neotron & 6SN7 printed in red letters on the blackened glass. The base is black plastic like. |
Eccletique,
I had great success with the Symposium Rollerblocks but not with their Stands (tried the Ultra Symposium and Svelte) under any of my equipment. My best results came from Silent Running Audio custom made stands followed by Zoethecus Z-Slabs used in combination with the Stands.
A good friend also had excellent results by placing Roller Blocks under his TT (Linn) after hearing what they did in my system.
If any of you decide to experiment with the Symposium Roller blocks, make sure you get your hands on some grade 3 Tungsten Carbide Balls. They are a huge improvement over the old stock chromium or the grade 25 Tungsten Carbide Balls. "Double Stacking" works even better. . |
Jazzdude
I am sitting with a Cortese and absolutely love it. Based on Mick's improvements on the Cortese and Grange that he announced on this thread late last fall, I am wondering whether I should jump to the Grange or send my Cortese off for an upgrade. Please do let us all know about the Cabernet when you get it up and broken in and how is stacks up.
Which Supratek pre-amp do you have now ? Do the Cortese and Cabernet share most of the same tubes in their complements? |
Stevem1960
Thanks for your comments on the Cabernet. My thoughts were that the new Cabernet/Grange might be significantly better than the older (Feb 2003) Cortese model that I have. I was wondering if the combination of moving one step up in model plus the upgrades that Mick made to Cabernet/Grange would make it a fairly significant upgrade. I feel that my system has become quite resolving, but that is an subjective opinion that is limited by my own experiences in hearing other systems.
I would be happy to hear your or anyone else's comments/suggestions on my system with ideas on best moves towards upgrading.
I am in the process of ordering a Teres 340 and so far I am thinking of starting with a Graham 2.2 arm. I am really new to vinyl and TT at this level (last experience was a Garrard back in the 70's) and have the idea that the Graham would be an excellent arm for the Teres and a bit easier to handle the set up and maintenance. I am still trying to figure out what the ideal cartridge might be. I realize that you have the Cabernet (line stage only) and therefore are probably not into vinyl, but I also would like to hear opinions from the experienced and articulate followers of this thread as well.
Here is my system as it sits now:
Electrocompaniet EMC 1UP CD player Supratek Cortese Tubed pre-amp Mark Levinson 23.5 200 watt amp Sonus Faber Extrema Speakers REL Stentor III Subwoofer

.
Asa,
Thanks for taking the time and interest to make your observations and suggestions - It's greatly appreciated.
I will try to catch up with the Teres crowd to get their ideas on an Arm and Cartridge. I was thinking of only getting the newest Graham 2.2. I have also asked Chris Brady for his ideas.
I love the BMI PC's in general and so, far everywhere I have put them in my system, they have bested everything else I have tried (quite a few by now). I am quite smitten with BMIÂs power cords (specifically the Sharks and Whale Supreme). I am just blown away with the Whale Supreme and what they do for almost all aspects of the sound. Are there any cords you like more than another for either my Cortese or the upcoming Teres TT ?
I will check into the Hovland IC for the Teres. I have a friend that uses a Hydra and I will get him to drag it over to compare it to the Ensemble Isolink and BMI IPLC that I have and let you know what we hear.
I am not familiar with the Mook Puck. Is it like Symposium Roller blocks, Walker Valid point, etc (I assume when you say Shun you mean Shunyata) ? The Roller Blocks the grade 3 balls is the best I have found to date.
Thanks again Asa - I would also appreciate hearing any observations/ suggestions for the rest of the gang. |
Bwhite,
I have had great success with Symposium Roller Blocks (w/Grade 3 Tungsten Carbide Balls)under both pieces of my Cortese.
Do you have any experience with Roller Blocks ? If not, you might want to give them a try. The have been amazing under my Electrocompaniet EMC-1UP as well. The best by far of everything else I have tried. |
. Steve1960 .
Thanks for your contributions to this thread. Your comments have been appreciated.
I think it is wise to try to define what type of sound pleases one most and then work hard to find the best synergistic component combination that works towards that end within the context that your budget (and then some) will allow.
We have all been fortunate to have the Audiogon Thread forum to learn from the experience of others. I have a Cortese (and are thrilled with it) only because of the honest, intelligent and sharing people who were willing to pass along their collective experience from their trials and tribulations. Sam Levinson, an oft quoted American journalist, once said ÂLearn from the mistakes of others. You can not possibly have the time to make them all yourselfÂ.
I have learned over time that many tweaks do not yield just small increments or fictitious improvements, but rather some pretty dramatic gains. Assuming one has gotten as far as one can with the major components, missing out on taking your system forward with the benefits of the so called Âtweaks would leave one far short of what you might other wise enjoy.
I assume that you just have not had the positive experience of changing out a power cord or adding some sort of mechanical ground that yields a jaw dropping improvement to the sound coming out of your system.
To be sure, some lesser quality component pieces that have large short comings can have their liabilities masked or compensated for by the help of a power cord or interconnect. But, I have yet to find a major component piece that was not objectively improved with the addition of a well matched power cord or mechanical grounding device or system.
I would not favor dropping a tweak in my system in lieu of adding a superior pre-amp, amp, speakers or front end piece that I could afford, but I also would not want to miss out in getting the most of what components I have by over looking a good Tweak. Why argue for a limitation against an improvement
Steve, . I would suggest that you try a set of Symposium Roller blocks (that do make a difference) under your pre-amp or front end piece or try TomÂs suggestion of using the Sistrum system (although I am not familiar with it). Bwhite might be able to share what his best power cord has been for a Supratek pre. Do make the time and effort to search out some good tweaks and you will certainly be pleasantly surprised and rewarded for your efforts.
I continue to be flabbergasted by the sonic improvements as I have worked my way through tons of tweaks and have uncovered some real gems. Several of the tweaks I have tried could be considered to have benefited my system as much or more than some of the good component upgrades I have done. . |
Bwhite . Please do share your observations on the new power cord once it is in and broken in.
Assuming you love it, please also let us know how to get one.
Thanks . |
Linkster .
I would suggest that you get either a Grange, Cortese or Syrah rather than a line stage only Supratek pre. The incremental cost of getting a model with the phono stage included is very little compared to the value (many believe the phono stage to be one of the best phono stages available) you get. Having both stages should greatly help your resale / demand (not that you will want to sell it anytime soon). You will also be more than set if you get into vinyl someday.
I have a Cortese that is about a year old and I have not heard the Grange nor I have I heard any of Mick's new iterations that started coming out late last year.
I think that either Steve 1960 or Mick can give you and informed / honest opinion as to how much the newer models have improved the various aspects.
I would also like to hear from anyone that might have heard either the new Cortese or Grange releases and how they stack up against the older models.
It would also be great to hear how much of an improvement that the Grange is over the Cortese on both the line and phono sections. |
Jazzdude . I think I remember that you ordered a Cabernet. Once you have everything settled and some hours on it, please let us know how it compares with the other Supratek models you have heard.
What tube compliment does it carry and what are you using in lieu of the stock tubes ? . |
Baranyi . I would suggest that you consider jumping up to the new Cortese if your budget can stand it. Mick has upgraded the Cortese & Grange but left the Syrah alone at this point. The Syrah is beautiful and the Cortese (older version) is heavenly with the right NOS tubes. I just can't imagine what the new Cortese or Grange sound like.
Either the Syrah or Cortese will plaster a major smile on your face that will not fade.
I will be happy to sell my one year old Cortese so I can order the newer Cortese or Grange.
|
. Baranyi, I thought about asking Mick to upgrade my Cortese, but I donÂt think I would be willing to live without my Cortese during the time it would take to have it upgraded.
I will probably have to order a new Cortese and then sell the one I have now once the new one arrives. I would just like to hear from anyone that gets the new Cortese that it is a significant upgrade over what I have now.
You will be thrilled with whichever Supratek pre-amp you pick. Good Luck. . |
Has anyone come up with a great interconnect (RCA) to be run from a CD source to a Cortese (or Syrah) ?
What would be the closest you would put 2 Cortese (Syrah) pieces to each other ? . |
BWhite, . Did you ever settle on what you think to be the best PC for the Cortese ? |
Tube rolling results: . First off, thanks ever so much to Ecclectique, Bwhite, Asa, and Jazzdude for all your help and advice in recommending NOS tubes for my Cortese. . The results of the NOS tubes have been nothing short of stunning with regards to the enhancement of the bass control, sound staging (expansion of and delineation), detail without giving up warmth / emotion, more life like sounding instruments, and much more musicality. I loved the Cortese with the stock tubes and now with the NOS in place and broken in, the listening has become an overwhelming and tireless experience. . I rolled the following tubes into the line stage section of my Cortese:
Nos Neotron 6SN7's Nos Mullard EL 37's NOS 5AR4 Philips Miniwatt Holland Metal Base NOS 1957 Tubes
They were all quite expensive, but in the end well, well, worth every penny. . I just ordered a pair of NOS Tungsol 6SN7 Black Glass round plates and will let you all know how they stack up against the Neotron 6SN7's after they arrive and are broken in.
It took a good solid 200 hours of continuous running time for the NOS tubes to fully break in before they really showed what they could add to the sound (EL 37's took a particularly long time).
For those of you rolling NOS, give them a bunch of hours before evaluating. The improvement from break in is huge. The value for the extra money invested in NOS is clearly available. .

Clipsal .
Bob Malecki at Tubeseller.com is an excellent source of 6SN7's. He is not cheap by any standards, but honest. He specializes only in 6SN7's.
You can ask Bob to find a pair of NOS Tungsol Black Glass Round Pate 6SN7's and he will let you know as soon as he finds a good pair. He also tests all of his tubes prior to shipping and labels the test results on each tube.
Email him directly at tubeseller.com or go to his website www.tubeseller.com
The NOS Tungsols from Bob might cost in the $ 200.00 - 250.00 range (USD). The NOS Tungsols are quite expensive but well worth it. You also might find them cheaper, but I prefer knowing that I am getting from a trusted sourc\e and that they excellent tubes. Over time, the extra cost of NOS means little when you get great long lasting tubes.
I found that NOS tube take 2-300 hours to reach their potential. I noticed remarkable differences after 100 and 200 hours of use. . Good Luck and Enjoy the process . |
. Slowhand . We will hit another milestone when we get to March 23rd, which will make it 2 years ago since you first started this great thread. Congrats & Thanks to you for getting this going and making us all aware of Supratek and MickÂs incredible pre-amps. . Best Regards Cello (Larry) |
Clipsal, . I would suggest that you send Bob Malecki an email and ask him to keep on the lookout for a good pair (almost) NOS Tungsol 6SN7's and to let you know when he finds them. He just told me that in all his years that he has only come across 2 pairs of what he thought to be true NOS Tungsol's. The TungsolÂs that he sent to me had readings of 2700/2800. I will be listening to them this weekend for the first time and post what I hear compared to the Neotron's (best 6SN7Âs so far) that I got from Bob have been listening to for the last 2 months or so. |
Clipsal, . The changes you should get from the break-in on a NIB tube should be quite large. I found that it took about 150 - 200 hours to see some real results. I would love to hear how your 350b's turn out. . I have a pair of Mullard 37's that are terrific but are tempted to check out the 350b's with all I have heard from everyone. . |
. Hi Joe (Jphii) . We are in a similar but reversed situation. I have a Supratek Cortese (line & phono stage) pre-amp and have ordered a Teres 340 table that should show up in late May/June. You are going to love the Syrah.
Tube choices have a huge effect on maximizing the sound. I would be happy to share my experiences with you. You can email me directly if you like. . Larry . |
Slipnot . There are several posts with regards to tube complements for the Syrah & Cortese pre's. . Scroll back 2-6 months and look for posts from Ecclectique, Jazzdude, Bwhite, Asa, and Tubegroover. The subject has been extremely well covered by this intelligent, experienced, and articulate group. . I read all of their posts more than once and followed their lead. There was a bit of trial and error but they saved me a ton of time and money. I was much better for the bit of struggle and it has all worked out beautifully on my system. . |
Joe (Jphii), . I don't mind Slipnot's questions in the least. I just wanted to let hom know that there was a wealth of posts on tube rolling listed above. . I am just about to start getting tubes for the phono side and will need help on that end so your questions are quite timely for me. Most of the posts for tube rolling have been for the line stage side. . I will be very curious to hear your results as you work your way through NOS tubes for the phono side. . Thanks, Larry |
Joe, . I have the Cortese and my phono stage arrived with two 6C45N-E ( Russian - Electroharmonix) & two 6922 (JAN Sylvania's made in USA). Keep in mind that I bought my unit used from a first owner and I am not sure if these are the tubes that Mick originally included with the Unit. . I am still waiting for my TT so I have no clue how these current tubes will sound. . I would love to hear ideas with anyone's latest and best suggestions for the 4 tubes on the phono side. . Thanks - Larry . |
Joe, . The letter on the tube that I assumed to be an N is as you have suggested, a Cyrillic P (Russian). I will start digging on through your tube website suggestion and elsewhere. . I am guessing that you will run out ahead of me with tube trials since you are already up and running with your Syrah and Teres TT and so I will look forward to your comments on your trials and tribulations. . I am guessing that there are several other Supratek owners that will benefit from your phono stage tube trails. . Thanks, Larry . |
.
I am satisfied with what I have done on the Line Stage side ( Mullard EL 37 - Philips Miniwatt / Mullard GZ 34 Miniwatt and Tungsol Black Glass Round Plate 6sn7) for my Cortese and want to do the best I can with the tubes for the phono stage side before my first TT (in twenty five years) arrives in mid to late June.
I would love to hear your favorite complement of tubes for the phono stage on either the Syrah or Cortese. I will be receiving a Teres 340 and will match it with a Graham 2.2 and Koetsu Rosewood Signature Platinum and am clueless on what to do on the tube side.
Musicality and an emotive sound are my priorities. I would hope for some good detail and solid bass in that order, but not at the expense of the musicality.
I mostly listen to classical (orchestral, chamber music and concertos) , female jazz vocalist and some occasional classic rock. . Any help would be greatly appreciated from our Cognoscenti. . |
. Opusone, . Please stop looking for Tungsols. You are just making it harder for the rest of us to find a good pair. Besides, they are not really any good. . |
Bwhite, Jazzdude, Eccletique, Asa, Tubegroover, . Do any of you have a handle on the possible replacement for the pair of 6C45 for the phono section side for the Cortese? . My cortese has the 6sn7's in the back, followed by the 6922's moving towards the front and the pair of Russian made ElectroHarmonix 6C45n-E's sitting in the front.
. I have not been able to find what the equivalent American tubes might be. Any ideas ?
. Brian - I just emailed James about getting a power cord for my Cortese - thanks for the info and work on this one - I will let you know how it does in my system.
. |
Bwhite, My Cortese was produced around February of 2003 and I bought it from the original owner in September of 2003. I have been told that the Siemens CCa's are excellent and I am going to get a pair of those to try along with a pair of Cryoed Telefunken ULN 6922's - Thanks again
Jazzdude, Do you or does anyone else know where to pick up the 6C45's? I am having trouble locating some. . Thanks for all of the advice, Larry . |
Congratulations Saint, . As mentioned previously by Abe, you are in for a great ride. . Do be patient and thoroughly break in the stock tubes before playing around with tube rolling. I think you are looking at more like 200 hours to get to the point that they have completely settled in. You will be quite surprised how much the sound improves during break-in. Also try to change out only one position at a time and live with that change for a while. Resist the urge to change several positions quickly. You really want to know what effect and change each tube/position yields. . There is also a lot to be said for really getting to know the sound of the unit and the stock tubes before you start creating a new sound. .
In my system I have found that in the line stage side the Mullard EL 37 - Philips Miniwatt / Mullard GZ 34 Miniwatt and Tungsol Black Glass Round Plate 6sn7 have been magical and well worth extra money.
I have not cranked up the phono stage as of yet so I cannot help much there. . Good Luck and enjoy it ! . Larry . |
Bwhite . Brian - I just ordered a Power Cord from Moray James for my Cortese. I should have it in my hands next week. . Moray commented that the cord was cryoed (pleasant surprise). How many hours did it take for your cord to fully break in. . Thanks for all of your hard work in researching this one. I will let you all know what kind of results I get in my system. . Thanks, Larry . |
. Has anyone bought a Grange model in the last 3 - 6 months ? . I would appreciate any info on their appreciation on the differences between the sound on a Grange as compared with a Cortese. . |
. Budget......I don't need no stinking budget ! . |
. I just dropped a pair of WE 350B's into my Cortese about 3 weeks ago and am more than thrilled with the fantastic results. They continue to improve (did not think that to be possible) as they break in. . I thought I had gotten as far as possible with improving the sound of my Cortese by tube rolling andwas quite happy, but I kept reading and re-reading all of the talk about how great and how expensive the 350's are. Finally, I found a pair of 350's on ebay at a relatively good price (still a killer), but it has been well worth the money spent. . I replaced a pair of NOS Philips 1963 Miniwatt / Mullard EL37Âs with the WE 350BÂs and the improvement was startling. The EL37Âs had produced wonderful sound and I was quite content, but you know, the disease got me and I popped for the 350Âs  great move. . I would highly recommend the EL 37Âs for the regulator position, but if you are in a position to pick up a good pair of WE 350BÂs, do it. . Given that the 350Âs should last longer at the regulator position longer than I will on the planet, this should turn out to be one of my better aggressive decisions. . I am thinking I can sell them to Bryan White in about 20 years and make a tidy profit. . |
Hi Bryan, . I am using a 5AR4 Philips Miniwatt Holland Metal Base NOS 1957 (same as Mullard GZ34) . I got my Mullard EL 37's and GZ34's from Brendan Biever email him at tekman@tubeworld.com or check out his website http://www.tubeworld.com. . Brendan's not cheap, but he has a great selection of high quality tubes and is quite honest. . I have bought from him 4 or 5 times and been more than happy each time. He is also a good source for 6922 and it's variants. . You can call or email me directly if I can be of any help. . Good Luck and let us know how you make out. . All the best, - Larry |
. Yes, any of the Supratek pre-amps will get much better with several hours of break in. The tubes themselves also need break-in. . You will probably hear improvements from 100-200 hours of use. Easiest method would be to run your CD player 24/7 on repeat at low volume for a week. . The best 6SN7's for my system by far have clearly been the NOS Tungsol, Black Glass, Round Plates. . Do let the Supratek fully break in and do about a month's worth of listening before you start rolling tubes. You will learn a ton this way and end up enjoying the process a great deal more. . Congratulations on a great decision - you will just love the Supratek. . Rgds, Larry . |
. Slowhand, . Mine is in the 6sn7 format and it is just wonderful (using Tungsol, Black Glass, Round Plates). . I just can't imagine with all we do (spend) that it would be worth it to try to save on the tubes at this level. . Having said that, I have not heard both configurations. You would have to hear both in the same system to be able to discern the real difference. . I would ask Mick which set up sounds best with the best tubes in place and assuming your budget will allow (even it won't), go for what will be the best sound. . Thanks for starting all of this for all of us. . |
Hi Harry, . How long ago did you receive your Cabernet ? . |
. Slowhand, . Now look for some Philips Miniwatt GZ34's and EL37's and a pair of reasonably priced WE 350b's and you are set for the line stage. . On deck is some work on the phono stage if you have an interest. . From what I have been told, you are in for more than a treat with Mick's latest iteration of the Cortese. It is supposed to be quite an upgrade even from the earlier Cortese models. . Let us all know how you fare with your tube rolling and eventually when your Cortese arrives. . Rgds, Larry . |
. Slowhand, . The EL37's I have are Philips Miniwatt (made in Gt. Brittan) and are 1957 NOS. They measure just under 4.5" tall from the base (not the bottom of the pins) to the top of the tube. . I was told that the Philips was the best of the EL37's and it is miles better than the stock tubes that came with my Cortese. . The WE 350b is quite a bit superior to the EL37's and I am glad I invested in them. As regulator's they should last almost indefinitely so the real cost is quite minimal. I may try to find a pair of 6l6g's just on David's (Ecclectique's) recommendation and to learn a bit more. . I would suggest you keep your eyes out for a pair of 350b's assuming that it fits into your budget. You can always get your money back out of them down the road. . What part of the country are you in ? . |
Slowhand, . Miami, Florida. |
Joe, . Thanks, I snagged a pair of the 6F6g's - You have earned your place in heaven with this one (or at least part of the way there). . Rgds, Larry . |
. Jay461, . After a lot of trials, I have had by far the best luck with the following:
Rectifier - Philips Miniwatt GZ 34
Regulators - 1st choice WE 350b (absolute best) 2nd choice Philips Miniwatt EL 37 . Do wait about 200 + hours or more before trying to do any tube rolling. . Good Luck & Enjoy (you will) . |
Jay461, . Regarding 6sn7 tube choices: For me, in my system, The Tungsol Black Glass Round Plate NOS are the best by a wide margin. . The TungsolÂs are hard to find but well worth the effort/money. . Try Bob Malecki at www.tubeseller.com or email him directly at tubeseller.com - best to email him and tell you what you are looking for. He specializes only in 6SN7's. He is not cheap, but quite honest and all of the tubes I have gotten from him have been excellent quality. . You can email him and if he does not have a tube in stock he will contact you when he finds a pair matching what you want. . Also try Brendan Biever at www.tubeworld.com or email him at tekman@tubeworld.com. Great inventory of all types of tubes - expensive, but honest and great quality tubes. . I think you are better off paying a bit more on the expensive tubes from a reputable dealer who will stand behind his products. . Good luck - you are going to have some fun. . |
. Slowhand, . I bought a bunch of different 6922's for my phono stage and I am just getting started with the first pair. I got slightly sidetracked by a few Hurricanes that rolled through followed by a bunch of traveling. . I have some Amperex gold pins, Telefunkens and a few others. All were highly recommended and quite expensive. I have it in my plans to start rolling them soon, but it will take a while. They are all NOS, so I will have to break them all in before I can do any worthwhile comparisons. . I will post my reactions once I get to the point where I can do some fair comparisons. . |
. Joe, . Count me in on 4 Reflektors. I don't want to be the reason that you do not continue to buy more tubes. . Have you started saving for your new Grange ? . Rgds, Larry . |
Slipnot, . Call Fed Ex, explain what has happened and ask the favor of moving it to you by a late Wednesday afternoon delivery. . They can move the shipment Monday night (assuming U.S. Customs does their thing on Monday) from Alaska to Memphis and then out from Memphis early Tuesday or Tuesday night and then possibly deliver to you on Wednesday. . I would ask for a supervisor tonight (Sunday) or Monday AM first thing and see if they can push it through Customs early on Monday and beg them to move it Monday night. . They do sometimes respond to emotional pleas. Do let them know it is a big deal to get it before Thanksgiving and how long you have been waiting. . If all works out well, you can piss your family off by screwing around with your new Supratek instead of by watching a game. . Rgds, Larry
|
Congrats Slipnot, . I am delighted that you got your Supratek before the long weekend. . Try not to pay some attention to your family on Thanksgiving. . Have a blast. It will get so much better in a couple hundred hours......and just wait till you roll some NOS in there. You are in for quite a nice ride. . Enjoy. . |
