Phono setting and MC/MM

Gave a buddy one of my old turntables and it has a MC cartridge.  Will that work on a vintage receiver with just a single Phono option?

I had a mc with both MC and MM but his receiver is just Phono.

Will a MC cartridge play?

Thanks for all the replies.

He is looking to pick up a pioneer sx780.

The cartridge is a Japanese name (I don't have the box in front of me).  Pic below.

Looks like we will hook it up and see if we need that head amp.

@sdaudiophile69

The cartridge is a Hana SL low output and the Pioneer is absolutely not compatible for cartridges MC.
I agree you won’t have enough gain, most likely, but it will hurt nothing to just hook it all up and give it a try. That will let you know where are you are starting from.
BTW, I hope your buddy realizes what a good friend you are to donate a TT with a Hana SL!
