My personal speaker evolution is as follows:

Von Schweikert DB-99's and then DONE!!

Yes I am very proud that I simply went from absolutly crap speakers (RCA inherited crap speakers) to the 99's. I wanted to avoid the upgrade loose money path so I went for the all or nothing aproach. I am very sure I saved money in the long run.
