Pat Martino

Just learned Pat Martino passed on the 1st of this month. Another giant gone.

My favorite recordings by him include "Footprints", "Exit" and "Consciousness".

What are some of yours?

Well, he played Fusion while that was the fashion but it seems to me he was more grounded in Mainstream Jazz than some of those you mention. He and Coryell were similar in this regard.

Wow-- that must've been really something!

As a guitar player, I'd love to hear more.

What were you working on with him and how do you think your studies with him most benefitted your playing? ? ?
 I'd already become familiar with CAGED and was used to building chords from triads by the time I encountered Martino's approach, so his idea of utilizing + and dim chords as "parents" didn't seem to fit with what I'd learned up to that point. Anyway, you are very lucky to have spent time studying with such a unique artist !

@hillde45:

I just ordered "Two for the Road" by Coryell and Khan, which was recently reissued on CD.

I love Connors' playing-- wish I could've seen RTF with Connors.

I saw Abercrombie just once, with Gateway Trio (also the only time I've seen deJohnette).
