Pani ... New ART-9 up and running ...

The Cartridge arrived and I took it down to Studio City to Acoustic Image to have Eliot Midwood set it up properly. Eliot is the bomb when it comes to setting up the Well Tempered turn tables correctly.

So, last night I had Mr. Golden Ears over to get his assessment as well. For a brand new cartridge that had zero hours on it ... all I can say is WOW! This is one naturally musical cartridge that doesn't break the bank. Its everything I liked about the OC9-mk III, but it goes far beyond the OC-9 in every respect.

In a previous post, I talked about the many mono records I own and how good the OC-9 was with the monos. Well, the ART-9 is on steroids. Just amazing on mono recordings.

At under $1100.00 from LP Tunes, its a bargain. The ART-9 surpasses all cartridges I've had in the system before. That would include Dynavectors, Benz, Grado Signatures and a Lyra Clavis that I dearly loved. In fact, its more musically correct than the Clavis. The Clavis was the champ at reproducing the piano correctly ... the ART-9 is equally as good in this area.

Sound stage, depth of image, left to right all there. Highs ... crystalline. Mids ... female and male voices are dead on. Transparency ... see through. Dynamics ... Wow! Low noise floor ... black. Mono records ... who needs stereo?

Your assessment that the ART-9 doesn't draw attention to itself is dead on. You just don't think about the cartridge at all. Not what its doing, or what its not doing ... its just beautiful music filling the room.

Thanks again Pani for the recommendation. I'll keep posting here as the cartridge continues to break in.

I've been following this thread, pulled the trigger and ordered one. I am so disappointed, the cantilever is off to the left wen viewing upside down, I saw another poster mentioned the same thing, is this common? I have a VPI superscoutmaster and an ARC ph 6, is this a good match? (the cart is going back, don't know if I should try another)
Thanks for all the support, greatly appreciated. I bought this from an private seller, not a distributor so no replacement available from him. He did agree to refund, but still a pain. I believe I saw good things written  regarding 2juki on ebay, is that correct? Along with the ARC the VPI has the JMW memorial 10.5" arm and then into a Mac 2200 pre-amp, never used a lomc but manual does indicate it is suitable as Oregonpapa mentioned. Thank you again, you are very helpful.
One last question, when I go to ebay and look at  2Juki's picture of the cart, 3rd picture in,  I roll over to zoom and that stylus looks off to the left as well, is it just me? Thanks in advance.
I have arranged return with original seller and am ordering from LP gear, the $59 difference is a small price to pay for the assurance and warranty of a USA based retailer. Thanks again for all your help, I'll keep you informed of my experience.
Thanks Frank and everyone else for all the advice. I was a bit let down with the misaligned cart, now I am looking forward to delivery again.
New ART-9 has arrived, LP gear offers free shipping , but it is slow. The cantilever is dead-on perfect. I will install soon, I feel the need to be extra careful with setup, and report back here. Thank you again for all the advice and support.

Installed the ART9 on Saturday, a threaded body would be helpful, but once the screws and round(?) nut were installed it was the easiest cart I have installed, due to the flat bottomed clear protector. I was able to do  most of the alignment with the protector on, when I took it off to check it out it and dropped it on the jig, it was perfect. I hate moving the cart around on the metal jig but this lets you move it with no issues.

Played the first record, brite, etched high end, pinched mids, and bloated tubby bass (it sounded like Levon Helm had a nose plug on). As the side played we could hear it changing quickly, my girl looks at me and says      " is it changing this fast, is that what I'm hearing?" and it was. By the end of the first record brightness diminishes, mids open up and bass becomes tight. As I keep playing records, the changes come more slowly and subtly, but it keeps revealing itself. Ten hours in it is a totally different sound, open, clear and deep, amazing!

I was researching this cart when I found this thread, glad I did. The experience of the skewed cantilever might have put me off enough to give up on the ART9, so glad I kept with it. Gain is no issue with the ARC PH-6, a very nice pre that I got for $1700 new in the box (for the posters looking for a pre)

Thanks to all for the support!!!  Especially Pani and Frank!

One thing I noticed, the documentation indicates a VTA of 23 degrees, is that Celsius?  ;-)

I have got about 150 hours on the ART9 now, it continues to amaze..

My AR PH 6 was just breaking in when I felt the need to upgrade from SoundSmith in the same price range as the ART. I kept track of hours on the ART up to 100 and now just enjoy the music. The thing I find is I don't hear the equipment, just the 3d images hanging out there from wall to wall. I recently installed a new record mat from Herbie's and I am in awe. I had a friend over recently, when I got up to flip the record he exclaimed " holy crap, that's a record?" anybody on the fence on this should jump on in.

@oregonpapa  what was the belt upgrade you mentioned early on in the thread?

@Frank I'm using a VPI Super Scoutmaster Reference, it has the HRX flywheel with 2 motors with classic III arm and platter. I very highly recommend Herbie's mats, I have the thinnest model 2 mm thick, his basic model, they do have a page on the website that gives recommendations for various tables, the underside grips the platter tight. It has made a world of difference. The ART and mat have elevated the performance of my rig without question. I'm very happy I didn't go with a Delos, which is what I was eyeing. I do field recording with a pair of AT mic's and they amaze me for the price, into my 2x DSD recorder, that is what brought me to the AT family and got me looking at the ART. Last night I had Philip Glass's Heroes LP and they were in the room, or perhaps I was in their room.
Frank, do not hesitate with herbies mat, you will thank me, I got his excellent II 2mm thickness. I have to measure the belts  and will be trying the origin belt, wondering if I should get 3, two for the motors that drive the flywheel and one for the platter, I'm thinking three...  I was also considering Herbies tube dampners as well. Never ends
