Oppo BDP-83 and making repairs.....

Firstly, this model, the BDP-83 is from 2009/2010 and has been superceded by newer Oppo Blu-Ray disc players several times since.  It is an early Blu-Ray player that received very positive reviews in its time in the spotlight.  Since that time there have been reported two issues with it that I am aware of.  The first to be widely commented on was the reluctant loader tray drawer behavior.  The loader tray would refuse to come out, mostly.  Later, there was another more serious issue, the "no disc" message when in fact there was a disc loaded.
There is factory support for these and any other issue you may be having with your BDP-83 or any other Oppo disc player, for that matter.  The Menlo Park, California operation will service your BDP-83 for $99.00 usd and you also pay outbound shipping.  For that price they fix whatever needs fixing and ship it back to you at their cost.  Reports so far - that I've found them - are positive and complimentary about Oppo Customer Service.  A good deal for those who wish to keep ther units functional. I've yet to try it.

For mine I have seen the loader tray issue.  And I've found that it can come back into functional condition.  There is a belt that operates the loader tray drawer.  I found that the belt on my unit appeared to be still functional and not really showing signs of distress.  Really, what the player wanted was to be; A) used more often  -- or B) warmed up a bit.  Cold weather seems to affect the behavior of that drawer mechanism.  Warmer get better drawer behavior than does Cold.  And if you let the unit sit for a couple of months between playing movies that might seem to aggravate this behavior problem.

Then, recently there has been the no disc message.  This one seems far more serious.
Just for grins I took a movie of the loader tray in operation.  Here's a link to it:http://www.theanalogdept.com/images/spp6_pics/Oppo/BDP-83/BDP83_nodiscmovie_1.MOV File size is ~11mb so depending on your web connection it may take less or more time to load.
The movie shows the loader tray in operation.  And there is no delay or recalcitrant behavior with the loader mechanism.  What we see is the loader tray opening, then closing but without a disc.  The transport attempts to read a disc and you see the laser reader hunting.  But the little turntable that spins the disc is not spinning.  This is what I think is the issue.  The turntable is really just a round plate mounted on the top end of the rotor of the stepper motor that powers it.  Direct Drive, so to speak.  The laser hunts but the disc doesn't spin.  That is the issue me thinks.
Ideas?

Thanks for the post.  I've owned this model since Jan. 2010.  I use it only for Blu-Ray/DVD playback - - never had any problems at all (knock on wood), but I'll keep the info on servicing the unit on file . . . just in case.
