I used the phono stage on my 90's vintage Yamaha AV 470 (or some such) for quite a while and when I replaced the internal phono stage with a Monolithic PS-1 phono stage (and upgraded power supply) the difference on MM cartridges was very slight indeed.
However, when I replaced the AV receiver with a NAD C320BEE the difference was day and night. And THEN the PS-1 phono stage was a necessary component.
