Ohm Walsh Micro Talls: who's actually heard 'em?

Hi,

I'd love to hear the impressions of people who've actually spent some time with these speakers to share their sense of their plusses and minuses. Mapman here on Audiogon is a big fan, and has shared lots on them, but I'm wondering who else might be familiar with them.

I have older ohm's and are used when bought. I am big fan of ohm walsh series along with magnepans. though different concepts, for my taste, I like having BOTH at the same time being driven by separate amps, in my case classic 90's carver amps and a must to improve any loudspeaker/amps at least system's lower than $10k is a DAKIOM feeback stabilizers like r-103, 203 or the newer models 253 and 263. I'm a believer of tweaking a system or part. In fact, I like the hobbyists and techs who do make modifications to existing systems that MAY need improvement. What I like about ohm's is that they are pretty versatile loudspeakers and can be played for music and movie with equal results. Other loudspeakers that are directional or conventional, placement, tweaking and good sound source is a must. OHM is user friendly, in other words, you don't have to spend mega bucks on amplifiers and HT receivers to make them sing. NO speaker system is for EVERYBODY, because no one has come up with a speaker box than can be remolded and mold back to it's original shape if you should alter it to your taste. I owned bose 901's in the 80's and I thought they were great for me back then, but room size, acoustics and source is the 901's downfall in most rooms besides it's unrealistic bass reproduction. I do not agree with their parts and design build, but their concepts of direct and indirect reflections I don't think any audio engineer would disagree totally. Ohm walsh series however creates better spatial imaging and realistic bass than conventional designs or strange designs like the bose 901's. The systems that are similar in concept as ohm acoustics is duevel, german physiks and decware rl series and of course MBL's, decware being the only company like ohm that are REASONABLY affordable to the average music lover. The rest is beyond normal income. To me planars and electrostats creates the most realistic reproduction of certain instruments like the piano and strings where as an omni directional design like those mentioned are more realistic as ensemble, group or combination of instruments being played, but individual solos I believe the planar and electrostat systems reproduce a truer sound. I have all the various designs except line source and horns which only elites can afford. But for those of us on a budget, ohm, magnepans, decware with the help of purchasing DAKIOM products/stabilizers will do WONDERS to your system however in expensive, but the finer grade of source, it's obvious your ohm's and maggies will show it's true potential.
i'm a proud owner of ohm walsh 300 mk 2, ohm walsh 4x0, 2x0, pro 200, eminent tech lft 8a which i will upgrade to a b, and will replace my non working maggie 2.5 with the new 1.7, and a rare acoustat spectra 33 w/spl-1 subwoofer my most majestic collection, driven by carver and sunfire amps! with dakiom feedback stabilizers and many more equipment too many to list. You can own great sound without being wealthy. That is what AUDIOGON is all about, such a great community. Here at audiogon, wealthy people sell their well cared for awesome equipment because of upgrad bug to us audio PEASANTS who couldn't afford retail. Used equipment from audiogoneers is the smartest shopping anywhere in home audio period!
mapman, I agree! Ohm was way ahead of their time. I have been following them since the 70's as a teenager. They developed surround before it was even developed. I owned bose 901's too and there is no comparison. Having planars, electrostats and srslabs klayman signature now discontinued, what makes the ohm's unique is that it creates a combination of all those unique designs in one design. I look at loudspeakers like instruments. Ohm surround sound is the ultimate affordable high end home theater loudspeakers. I was using my 4xo as main, 2xo rears and pro 200 as center and it blends well with NAD or carver/sunfire amp/processor or receiver which I use and it's magic when you use DAKIOM feedback stablizers and sound processors like carver holography or srslabs, bbe or behringer processors. I haven't tried tubes yet. I use my tubes for my bookshelfs! I like the clean sound of tubes. Until I bought inexpensive tube amps, now I understand why many audiophiles spent $$ on tube amps. It's really worth it for the hobby. Until I heard planars and electrostats, I didn't know any other sound. Until I heard ohm's I didn't know true omni and combination electrostat/planar and dynamic all rolled into one! ohm inspired the more expensive german designs such as german physiks, duevel and mbl omni directional designs, especially german physiks which uses the walsh concepts. I'd like to hear those ultra high end designs.
ohm do not stay posted on ebay and audiogon for very long because every ohm fan will jump to buy or bid on them not like other speakers
For you people who like holography, nothing better than to use the LEGENDARY BOB CARVER AMPS such as sunfire or carver preamps/amps WITH DAKIOM feedback stabilizers. All my ohm's eminent tech, magnepans are all run by these combinations. Since I am a processor fanatic,I like to tweak using dbx, peavey, bbe to add to the juice. I don't know why ohm did not stick to the old pyramid designs, just because many of their craftsman/cabinet makers retired. I hate the new cabinet designs, but would like to have the new drivers. I can't believe i owned bose 901, 601's in the 80's only to wake up to reality and listen to REAL music coming from a TRUE loudspeaker, OHM WALSH series. I LOVE MY OHMS as well as my maggies.
I used ohm 300 mk 2 for fronts, pro 200 for center,2xo for rears and also have a 4x0. I use a SVS sub which is cylindrical, what more can you ask for non conventional setup? all being driven by carver/sunfire. Oppo is my blu ray player and lots of dakiom stabilizers. Still haven't decided on hd projector upgrade. I have too many loudspeakers, still have acoustat spectra electrostats, eminent tech, maggies and NO BOSE. Can't really go wrong any of these designs!
I am fortunate to have many types of well designed loudspeakers, so I can pretty much choose. Of all the speakers I collect, I have OHM acoustics the most. In fact I own a walsh 2xo, 4xo, pro 200 sound cylner and my best, ohm walsh 300 mk 2 rebuilt drivers by ohm upgraded to the 4000 series. For those who don't think it needs a boost in the highs and mids, you can always get an ADD on supertweeter or DIY project by selecting your transducer from partsexpress, madisound, simply sound or ebay etc. I have a janszen z 130 electrostat add on that I am adding to the ohm 300 mk 2 that will put it in another level. To have both the ohm walsh and the ESS HEIL 1D which I modified the bass drivers by adding a sub driver to the front, removing the radiator in the back and using the stock front drivers, the result is awesome. The only think that equals or possibly surpass it among my systems is my modified ohm walsh with the janszen electrostats. It is hard being a speaker collector because I love all my different designs. I am a magnepan and acoustat fan too, because I HAVE THEM also. BOSE hit the dumpster long time ago after the mid 90's when I no longer had any need for them. Bose to me these days is nothing but a joke. In the 70's and mid 80's they were good for the time. Dbx soundfield was far better designed, and I have them too! OHM speakers to me is the MOST versatile and multipurpose loudspeaker every designed. It was way ahead of it's time for critical stereo listening and home theater. The original AR-9 is also the loudspeaker way ahead of it's time. Most of the home theater towers were patterned after the original AR 9 some 30 plus years ago. Heathkit was another speaker design that was way ahead of it's time made for todays home theater. without ohm's, there would be no higher high end like german physiks, mbl, duevel. I think OHM's and ESS are the two of the most revolutinary designs by two of the greatest sound physicists the late dr. lincoln walsh and dr. oskar heil.
