Odd DAC Pricing

I’m in the market for a Mola Mola Tambaqui and I’ve noticed that many listed for sale are of recent manufacture and only owned by the seller for a few months, yet they are reselling many thousands below retail. How can it be that an item that retails for $13,500 is so often resold only months later for $4000- $5000 off.  Sometimes the reseller is already the second owner in just 6-9 months.  Is there something I don’t know?  Some gray market? If you know something about how these are purchased that you can’t share publicly please DM me.  Thanks for any information.

I purchased a new, open box Mola Mola Tambaqui from an authorized dealer, owned it for about a month, and listed it for $9,500 at the end of 2023.  It sold quickly. I thought it sounded very good, almost perfect in a technical sense, but not as musically engaging or fun to listen to as my other DAC. I value musically engaging and fun over perfect, and so I sold it.

@mjjw - In that price range, you could take a look at the Meitner MA3i for $11.5K.  If you are considering R2R DACs, there are others.

@mjjw - In that price range and considering R2R DACs, I would recommend looking at the Mojo Audio DACs. Give them a call and discuss which model might best serve your needs.  45-day trial.  There are others too, like Holo May and Denafrips with each having their own distinct sound signature.  Merason DAC1 MkII was also nice but sort of a hybrid, not R2R.
