I attended the show on Friday and spent about six hours visiting the various exhibitors looking to make a speaker purchase. While I was glad that I attended the show, I found it much less interesting than last year. Most obvious was the absence of several of the larger manufacturers such as McIntosh, Musical Fidelity, Thiel, Sony, etc..
Last year's McIntosh room contained a full complement of McIntosh products along with a complete Martin-Logan surround sound set-up. Blew me away! Equally enjoyable last year was the Musical Fidelity room, also exhibiting their full complement of products in addition to their KW500 integrated driving Jim Thiel's big baby, the 7.2s. This year's displays just did not seem to have the grandeur of last years.
Two of the biggest disappointments were the Sound by Singer rooms (aircraft hangars?) admission for Bill Gates only. The personnel demo'ing the equipment belonged to the living dead. The equipment, all very high-end VTL, DCS and Peak Consultant (speakers) products were barely described beyond their model number and price, nor did they sound like 100 thousand to two hundred thousand dollar systems. Maybe it was the room?
However, I found several rooms to be quite enjoyable. In one room, Von Schweikert Audio had their VR-4jr's paired with DK Designs 150 watt hybrid integrated. The system sounded very, very nice but not quite as nice as last year when the 4jr's were paired with a VAC integrated. To be fair, the VAC runs about $20,000 compared to the DK integrated which sells for $2,995. The VR-4jr's currently are, in my opinion, the best value speaker around at $3,995 a pair. Does anyone know if the jr's were filled with lead shot (forgot to ask) for the show?
The Von Schweikert VR-4SR's were being demo'ed in a second Von Schweikert Audio room where they were paired with the VAC integrated discussed above. Best sound in the show in my opinion, but an extra $3,500 for the 4SR's (twin nine-inch woofers rather than the twin seven-inch woofers in the jr's). Sweeter sound, and with more slam than the jr's.
A most interesting piece of new equipment was found in the Moscode room. The 401HR 200 watt integrated (tube preamp / solid state amp) was making terrific sound paired with VR-4jrs (the jrs were all over the place). The sound was better than (sweeter) than the DK Design VR-4jr combo discussed above even though the speakers were not properly wired for best sound (one speaker cable pair to the bass unit and the VSA link to the mid-tweeter module). The 401 is interesting in that the front panel drops down allowing for easy access to the two pairs of tubes in the preamp section. A tube rollers delight! Show price was $4,995 for a very well built piece of equipment.
Excellent sound also in the Totem room. How does Bruzzese get such deep and tight bass from such small speakers? Vince was using an Ayre CD player and integrated to drive his smaller speakers. Vince also gets the award for the wildest decor; the room looked like the inside of a teepee. I was disappointed that the Wind was not on display. My speaker choices are down to the Wind, the 4jr's and the Hyperion 938s. Missed the Hyperion room but will be demo'ing them at the distributor's house next week.
Jeff Joseph had, again in my opinion, the second best sound at the show. Jeff has a new model (sorry I forgot the model name), just under the top of the line Pearl that was making beautiful music driven by a pair of Manley 250 watt tube monoblocks. Source equipment was a VPI turntable and a Mod Wright modded Denon (tube output) DVD player for SACD. Very, very, very nice.
Speaking of being pissed-off (was I speaking of that?), what's with the FABULOUS prize give away, Vandersteen speakers, Clear Audio Emotion turntable, Pathos integrated, JMLab speakers, etc., given away by Singer, Audio Connection and Stereophile. YOU HAVE TOO BE THERE ON SUNDAY FOR THE DRAWING OR YOU'RE NOT ELIGIBLE FOR THE PRIZE!!!!
