Hey everybody, it has come to my attention that Musical Fidelity is coming out with a new DAC. Has anyone heard it yet? Apparently there have only been 12 sent to North America, 8 went to the US and the rest here in Canada.
This DAC kicked the bucket the first day when we put the live Tool CD in. I worked fine for about two hours then kept flashing "no sync" and refused to read any more data. P.S. The Nu-Vista cd player is $4995.
The new MF DAC sounds quite good and gives alot of performance for the money. It still isn't as good as a $3500 single box unit (Linn Ikemi, Krell KAV-280cd, Meridian 508/24) but for the price it gets awfully close. If you have an older CD player that you don't want to replace but want a more open, spacious sound I'd definately recommend checking this unit out.
We tried other transports/cables and the problem was the DAC. It is a 24 bit solid state unit with 96K/192K switchable upsampling. It seems very well built and it's likely that the problem was just a fluke. I'll keep you posted on the sound when we get a replacement.
Here's an interesting bit of information - Sam Tellig's (not his real name) graphic design company does the layout for the Audio Advisor catalog which was the exclusive Musical Fidelity dealer in the US. Not to say that the MF gear is not good but maybe there was a little "you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours."
