other new albums i bought recently, that were my fav before phoenix was the FUR's blitzen trappper and SM & Jicks's real emotional trash. both really great and highly recomended. thromgard i will order the new arcade fire lp.
Rancid "let the dominoes fall" if you like punk, clash, green day, a must hear. double vinyl album with a lot of great punk/protest music. for mild head bangers. highly recomended! i am now a RANCID FAN!
neil young's "FORK IN THE ROAD"; 60's,70's, 80's, 90's and 2000, 5 decades and STILL THE MAN!
THIRDEYEBLIND's "URSA MAJOR" excellent songs, fair sound a little/fairly compressed. colored vinyl, likely all digital recording. another new album i like alot is the LemonHeads's "VARSHONS". much better sounding, great songs. a little graphic, but if you don't listen to hard or you like that sort of thing, it is a great ablum. both very highly recommendable.
Ben Harper and Relentless7's "White Lies For Dark Times". Great title and cool album cover art work. You have to think about it. Sound is pretty good. A nice tight lower end, but a little bright at times. liked several songs out of the gate, others I had to listen to a couple of times. Worth the price of admission.
CAGE THE ELEPHANY's self titled album "CAGE THE ELEPHANT". white stipes fans sure to like it. a winner. comes highly recomended.
MATT & KIM's "GRAND". i found it very fun to listen to. a relaxed pop sound that is involving and yet not at the same time. not the best vinyl but a good pressing with resonably good accustics, worth the spin. another interseting album by OWL CITY called "ocean eyes". also fun pop and really enjoyable listening. one white color vinyl and one blue, but still manages to sound really good. a lot of great lyrics and up beat sounds. both are definite winners and highly recomended. just bought alot of new vinyl working my way through. some disapointments but a few gems like these.
one more i must add to my suggestions for NEW vinyl, built to spill's "there is no enemy". at times he sounds like john lennon and at other times a completely uneek pop rock sound. i liked it so much i ordered the first three albums as well. don't miss it!
much to my suprise John Mayer's "BATTLE STUDIES". exsellent album with great songs and sound. the quallity of vinyl and pressing are first class, with a very nice gatefold. Another suprise to me was a release "THE MODERN LOVERS". it is a shame they could not keep it together, although their loss was the CARS and THE TALKING HEADS gain. don't usually buy releases but this one is worth it. looking for a NM of an original though.
Tom Prtty & the HeartBreakers "The LIVE Anthology". Not just great music, very very good and flat vinyl and fantastic sound, BUT the nices BOX set I have ever seen. FIRST CLASS! my understanding 2500 world wide copies in the vinyl set. puts that Beatles box set to shame. don't hesitate. certain winner and collectors item. ***** highest possable grade, hopefully others will follow their lead, though I doubt it.
Alice in Chains "jar of flies/sap". Suprising great album. definitly derseves a spin.
DEVO is back with a really fine album the "NEW TRADITIONALISTS". It is in cool clear vinyl, makes you a little confused watching it spin. Macdadtexas; I know, see just above. But if you love STP you will go crazy over gaslight anthem's "american slang", my vote for album of the year, to date!
ARCADE FIRE's "THE SUBURBS" especialy the 3rd side. Their best effort yet. Another, but already mentioned, Tom Petty's "MOJO". Forget what it sounds like on the radio, his/their best effort in a long, long while. And finally, have you gotten GASLIGHT ANTHEMS "AMERICAN SLANG"? What are you waiting for still album of the yr, in my oppinion!
The Avett Brothers's "I and Love and You". excellent album with great tunes. only complaint, instead of double album 3 sided would be much better, would not have to flip so much. Another new album Joan Jett and the Black hearts's "Greatest Hits". A true female ROCK and ROLL STAR. New VINYL old rock and roll. One more to check out. Graham Park is back. All new songs. definitely worth a spin. He still has a great sense of humor on "imaginary Televission". For those who do not know who Graham Parker is, his big hits, among others, were "HeyLord, Don't Ask Me Questions","soul shoes", "Hold Back the Night", "passion is no Ordinary Word" and his biggest "Local Girls". If you don't know him check him out, you will be glad you did.
Jesse Malin's DMM album reissues "Gltter in the Gutter" in 45 speed and "The Fine art of Self Destruction" in 33 speed. First these are both first class reissues, in both gorgeous looking vinyl(smooth, deep black, flat vinyl(looks like a perfectly still pond), cover, insert and outer protective sleeve. The content(songs) on both are first class as well. I am now a fan. If you are a Ryan Adams fan, as I am, these are for you! Gutter seemed a little compressed at time but over all two great buyes. Don't hesitate, limitted and no doubt gone soon.
Just bought alot of new vinyl. as I work my way through them, the hold steady, the new pornagraphers, etc. I find little to get excited about, while good, nothing to write home about. on an opisite note, contary to rolling stone mag the black eyed peas's "the end" sucked. THEY ARE NOT THE FUTURE OF MUSIC! in my humble opinion. Now the one to watch and buy. THE GASLIGHT ANTHEM "THE'59SOUND". A jersey band on the rise.
recently aquired the gaslight anthem's first album "sink or swim". A real rock and roll album. if you like early bruce, definitly buy it if you can find it. Now after giving The New Pornograhers albun "together" further spinning, it definitely grew on me. I give it **** and a real recomendation. The other previously mentioned, The Hold Steady's "Heaven is Whenever" proves this is more then a bar band, but a real pop/rock band. another **** album. I have to say one more time that rolling stone mag got it REALLY wrong. THE GASLIGHT ANTHEM is the #1 reason to be excited about new rock music and The black eyed peas are a reason to be depressed about the state of rock and roll. Like to start a petition to have them retract their statement.
Stone Temple Pilots self titled new album is in a word GREAT! ***** stars. A definite buy. don't miss this one. I now have to seek out and buy their earlier stuff. On another note, I have never been much of a Jimi hendrex fan, but I thought, what the heck(not really. nobody says heck, do they) I will give his "new" never before released album after what, 40yrs, a try. Boy am I glad I did. First I have to say the Vinyl and cover are first rate. Sound quality fantastic. Music not what I expected, better. another definite buy. Valleys of Neptune has inspired me to buy more Hendrix. Oh well who would of thought. more to come.....
The Gaslight Anthem's "American Slang". The new old New Jersey sound. ***** + **. had to add the 2 extra *. This is a band to get excited about. they are the reason to be excited about rock and roll! Take that black eyed peas, give me a break. If you don't love this album give up on R&R and move on to jazz or classic. Now I will say a little bright but that's that am wall sound. A MUST BUY!
for me the pickens have been thin this summer. bought a fair amount of dissapointments like rufus wainright, not his father. but Drive By Truckers didn't dissapoint. "THE BIG TO-DO" a real good spin. I will say the packaging and pressings have not dissapointed at all. They seem to be getting consistently better all the time.
Another recent release Golen Smog's "down by the old mainstream", definately worth a spin, especialy sides 3 and 4. Nice quality vinyl and very good sound. It has a very nice gatefold cover as well. Will not dissapoint.
Cat Stevens *MAJIKAT* 1976, new vinyl old concert. makes you wonder what may had been? GREAT concert! if you love cat you'er gone to love it!
"ONE FAST MOVE OR I'M GONE" I like it! Death cabs B. Gibbard with J. Farrar great team up. Don't hesitate, comes with dvd of the movie and small pamflet. Nice package. Great spin.
Morrissey's reissued "bona drag". I was never a smith's fan or even morrissey for that matter. This album changed everything. It is fantastic, I love it. I am now a fan and I understand all his fans world wide. On top of it this a great package and vinyl. A MOST buy!***** Run out and buy it, you will thank me.
New batch arived a week or so ago with 4 very noteworthy albums. The first a reissue that I have not seen before in vinyl. Spoon's KILL The MOONLIGHT. Wow, if you like Spoon, as I do, you will love this lp. Even if you don't love them or know who they are you got to get it. Next up The Black Crowes's "CROWEOLOGY". I love these versions. They are all acoustic. Jealous again, I love it on this albun. If you are into the black crowes, and you know you are, buy it. It is a beutiful package with 3 great albums inside. A bargain. Finally two newly released albums King of the Beach's "WAVVES" and Crowed House's "Intriguer". Both well worth the entry. You will spin each several times. They get better each time you play them. So get doubles.
Croweology is a great sounding piece vinyl. Especilly sides 1 and 2(some of their best stuff). A real nice package, with great sound through out. Definite buy.
Another batch, 3 more impressive albuns. Jenny and Johnny's "I'm Having Fun Now". Very poppy, fun to listen to with some great lyrics. Sound quality better then fair. Vinyl clear not best quality but flat. Cover adequate. The next Ray Lamontagne's "God Willing & The Creek Don't Rise". I did not like his prvious records and was hesitant to buy this one. Glad I did, well worth the investment. Nice package and vinyl. Very good sound. Finally Alice In Chains's "MTV Unpluggged". Great package, sound, vinyl and music! First Rate.
"NO BRTTER THEN THIS" the title says it all! John Mellencamp, with this album, he shows still has got it. I must also say that the mono recording is excellent, in your face. In fact it made me preoder the Dylan mono box set from amizon. The songs are great. An all accustic album, did not know he had it in hin, he does. The gate fold very nice, vinyl black and flat. ***** definte BUY! On another point saw gaslight anthem in NY at radio music. He/they were GREAT! THE REAL DEAL! The hall not so good for rock and roll but not a bad seat in the place.
Weezer's "Hurley". Vinyl flat and black, sound at times bright. Music very good to GREAT. Possibly their BEST to date. Absolutly worth the price of admission.
Hole's "Nobody's Daughter". I bought this record about 2 to 3 months ago. It has been just sitting there. I kept looking at it and wondering why I bought it? Well I finally open it up to give it a spin. To me this album is proof you find the best stuff when you least expect it. The lead singer, Courtney Love, is a cross between Joan Jet and Janis Joplin. She is a hard rocking singer with a hard edge. The sound quality of this pressing is pretty good. The vinyl is flat and thin. The cover, not much to it, not a lot spent on this pressing. But, if you like hard rocking female sinders, this album is for you. It is well worth the spin. This record proves Love was more then just Curt's girlfriend. Much more.
the thermals's "Personal Life". Excellent album. I liked it so much I ordered all their older albums as well. It is amazing what great music you can miss if you are not listening. The vinyl is very nice and flat. Compressed at times. Maybe intentional, for that AM sound. But, reasonably good sound. Simple cover. I very much enjoyed this album and strongly suggest you give it a spin.
RA RA RIOT's "THE ORCHARD". Great pop/rock songs. Excelent sound. Flat well pressed vinyl. Simple sleeve. Well worth the spin. **** 1/2 stars. Near perfect album. A group to watch!
Bruce Springsteen "The Promise". After listening the first time, I was very disapointed and put away on my record rack. Last night I started revisiting springsteen. Born to Run, Greetings from Asbury Park, etc. Then I listen to Darkness at the Edge of Town. I forgot how great an album it was. So I gave the Promise another spin. Side B would be the weekest side in my oppinion. Having said that, BETTER THEN 90% OF EVERYTHING ELSE OUT THERE! You think about it, this is what did not make it on to the album. Unbelivable. Much better then I first thought. First rate package. Well worth the money and the spin. MUST HAVE for Springsteen fans. Lets face it, who is not a Springsteen fan? Even John Lennon new he was great! **** 1/2
About two months ago I preordered the Dylan mono box set and the Witmark demos. I recieved the demos a few weeks ago. Like most of the Dylan bootleg series, I was disapointed and could have gone without. Hype again! Two days ago I got the Mono box set. I was not even going to bother opening it. But it came with plastic wrap mostly ripped off. So reluctently, I unpacked and figured what the hell? If you are a Dylan fan, if you were there in 1974 when he did his come back world tour with the band, if you love Dylan and understand his true greatness, this box set will make you relize he was/is even GREATER then you thought. It is fantastic. It is a first class box set. The best that Dylan has ever sounded. When he sings "even the president of the united states has to some time stand up naked", I am there. At that concert. Except, the sound here is soooo much better. It is astonishing. We are hearing a recordings, from close to 50yrs ago, that has never sounded so goog(GREAT, FANTASTIC,extraordinary, etc). A most have. No down side. A bargin. I am hooked all over again. And it is fantastic. *****
Patti Smith's "Outside Society". Excellent sound quality, nice package. Not a gatefold but cool record sleeves, liner notes and song explinations. Oh, and GREAT music!
The BLACK KEYS's "EL CAMINO", The DECEMBERISTS's "LONG LIVE THE KING", WILCO"S "HOLE LOT of LOVE" and maybe the best album of the year, in my opinion, Robbie Roberts's "HOW TO BE CLAIRVOYANT".
