Nak CR3a stuck in play/pause mode

Any advice on getting a Nakamichi CR3a out of play/pause mode with a tape still in? I have powered down/unplugged several times to no avail. Removing cover I can see no obvious release mechanism. Since it is electronic maybe there isn't one? I appreciate any help
