nad left channel goes out

i have a nad 2400 w/ 1600 monitor series...it will be playing just fine, and all of a sudden left channel goes. if i crank the volume up on pre-amp it comes back (i know you shouldn't do this), my question is, how do i tell if it is amp or pre-amp problem.. i do not want to disasmble entire system, if i can just remove one for repair.

Switch the left and right cables between the 2400 and the 1600. If the problem moves to the right channel, it's the 1600. If not, it's the 2400.

No apologies necessary; I should have been clearer. Switch the left and right channels either on the amp or at the outputs from the preamp (but not both - just whichever is easier to get to). The idea being that the left channel from the preamp is now going to the right channel of the amp and the right channel of the preamp is going to the left channel of the amp. If the left channel still goes out then it's the amp, if it follows the cable switch then it's the preamp.

Jean,

It certainly sounds like you did the right thing and, yes, the balance control should control the sound in reverse. Just to confirm - you did only switch the cables in one place - the inputs to the amp?
