My new Krell LAT-1000. Anyone else like these?

I can confirm that thety are really sensitive to cables. I tried several cables with the LAT 1000 but the best match was the expensive Nordost Valhalla. Pictures of the new Krell Modulare at CES2008 also show them with the Valhallas. In the TAS review A. Cordeseman reported good results with Kimber, Discovery and Straightwire and advised agains cables with networks. |
Hi Microstrip, I'm happy to hear the wonderful Stradivari are doing the job for you! They are truly great speakers. My room is 7.5m X 4.8m, and I really think any smaller would be a problem for the LATs, as I too feel that they need a room on the bigger side, so I agree entirely with you there. I also agree on how forgiving they can be with poorly recorded material (which is all too common these days...), but strangely they can beautifully highlight a great recording with their exceptional resolution. I have been trying a few different speaker cables lately, and boy, these LAT1000 are sensitive to cables. They hate Cardas, but shine and sing with Siltech. I might try Harminc Technology Magic Tweeter next, as I want to tame the highs, just a tiny bit (unlike the cardas which just ruined everything). But I digress.... Yes, the fight for the top speaker is a great one for us! Lets hope it continues forever!! I will be firther treating my room in the coming weeks, so am looking foward to that too. |
Congratulations! You have one of the best speakers in the world. I lived for almost a year with a pair of LAT1000 in a medium size room with a resonant ceiling and only parted with them because they excited it. Also I found that they sounded best in an all Krell system and it would oblige me to exchange all my gear – and once you listen to an Evolution One – Two system it is difficult to accept anything else with these speakers. I was not prepared to spend this sum, they had to go. Do not borrow the Evolution’s if you are not prepared to buy them! They are very musical and strangely, for a Krell, “forgiving” speakers. CDs that for many years I considered of low recording quality sounded great with them – listen to the Eugen Jochum old DG Carmina Burana and it seems the performers are on the stage singing for you. They are highly detailed but at the same time have a tilted down balance. Voices are much “electrostatic like”. Although I read somewhere they were designed to sound good in small rooms, I always felt they would need a big room and overpowered mine in large orchestral works. My next speaker (Soundlab A1s) were much larger and could energize the room much better. But this is another story. Since them I fixed my ceiling problems and enlarged my room. My current Sonus Faber Stradivari are giving me much pleasure, both for listening and visually – they are the black graphite type. I know that the best speaker in the world does not exist, but happily many fight for it! |
Sorry Brian, I don't know why I assumed you were in the US! I am in Australia, and was keen to try the Rockports, however there are no importers/distrubitors here, ,hence there are none in the country...I'm not sure about Avalon, but I will find out and if they are available here i will go have a listen. Just out of curiousity mind you, as I still don't want to get divorced, that would be more expensive than a whole new system! Hahahaha. Thanks for your kind words. |
David, I live in Europe, not in the USA... Better speakers then LAT-1000? Avalon Isis and Rockport Altair(even better then Isis IMHO)... But, both are more expensive as well, Isis marginally, Altair a lot more expensive... Still, I like your review very much indeed. It is an honest experience of true audiophile! |
Thanks Brian! I will try the recommendations you mentioned. Yes the voicing is not quite neutral, I discovered last night listening with a much more experienced audiophile than myself. But I like it! I also agree that LAT-1000 makes most sense in an all Krell system, but luckily that's what i have. I don't see myself changing anything much now for a long time (as I don't want to get divorced, for one!). I also guess there may not be a whole heap of amplifiers around to drive the hungry beasts as well as Krell's own anyhow.... I wonder what the two better speakers were? Unfortunately for me, there is very little choice where I live, so seraching for speakers (or amps, etc) is not easy and sometimes impossible. You guys are so lucky in the US to have such great access to everything! Anyhow, I consider myself very lucky to have a system which I am totally happy with (at the moment...). I really can't explain how happy I am with it, I truly love it! Thanks again mate, David. |
David, I almost fully agree with you but, I have few findings of my own... LAT-1000 is very good speaker with truly individual voicing. And this voicing is not fully neutral IMO. Bass is not the deepest or the most honest that I heard. Put some organ music or or Yello's "Pocket Universe" and you will find out that LAT-1000 is not going much below 30Hz... But, above that bass is powerfull and very dynamic. For $55K you have few very strong competitors and LAT-1000 is only making sense in all Krell system IMO. I heard at least two far better speakers lately... But, this is my personal finding. Anyway, thanks for review and enjoy your LAT-1000s! |
