My Morning Jacket / anyone seen a show ?

Yes. I saw them a few years ago and they were great. At the time they were supporting "Z' and seemed to be having a good time improvising on some of the "jammier" numbers like "Off the Record". They were loud, but I enjoyed them immensely. Jim James has a captivating voice. My Morning Jacket has a new album called "The Waterfall" being released May 4th.

I saw them twice in the last couple years. Fans would say the're the best live show going right now.

Did you like Jim James' last solo record ? It wa one of my favorites !!
I'm not sure if I will take the plunge and go see them .

i saw mmj at lollapalooza (with a kids orchestra!) and also at a 600 person hall--they are a great live band. jim james is really one of the best singers of this generation, and they jam purposefully, without the formless wankery of so many of their peers. that said, i find their each of records after "it still moves" to be progressively worse--they're going farther away from the spacey/country/soulful thing they do so well and closer to glossy MOR. i just heard a song off their new one (it's on spotify) and it was cringeworthy.

I must say that after the first three songs, I'm hooked on this album so far. l LOVE Z, and Circuital very much. I do enjoy Pop Rock or Alt. Rock, and Alt. Country. Thanks for the heads up on It Still Moves.
I'm curious if you found Jim James' last album as epic as I did ?

i certainly don't mean to dis anyone who enjoys their later records--i personally don't think the more polished, song-oriented format suits them well. if you're digging it still moves, i'd also check out "at dawn", which is rawer but equally great.
as for jj's solo record, i liked it, but thought, again, that his earthier country stuff is better the electronic/techno thing he's dabbling in. for that reason, i preferred the record he did with jay farrar, new multitudes, which is rethinks of woody guthrie songs and is really good. also, if you're on spotify, check out jj's "tribute", which is acoustic versions of george harrison songs and, i think, really exceptional.

Thanks for the recommendations. There is also a relatively new band from Athens called Futurebirds. They sound a lot like early MMJ using a pedal steel guitar and a lot of echo.

Loomis and Max, you should listen to Hiss Golden Messengers last album ,
called, Lateness of Dancers. It is fantastic!!!!

also listened to lateness of dancers and likewise appreciate the rec. i've previously raved about his album "bad debt," which is just him and his guitar--it's haunting.

Thanks Loomis, I will check out Bad Debt, for sure . I usually prefer a full band and full production sound , as in , Lateness of Dancers.

Blame It on Me, Cassy'O . He has a very interesting baratone , and I love his inflections.
