My Long List of Amplifiers and My Personal Review of Each!

So I have been in a long journey looking to find the best amplifiers for my martin logan montis. As you know, the match between an amplifier and speakers has to be a good "marriage" and needs to be blend exquisitely. Right now, I think I might have found the best sounding amplifier for martin logan. I have gone through approximately 34-36 amplifiers in the past 12 months. Some of these are:

Bryston ST, SST, SST2 series
NAD M25
PARASOUND HALO
PARASOUND CLASSIC
KRELL TAS
KRELL KAV 500
KRELL CHORUS
ROTEL RMB 1095
CLASSE CT 5300
CLASSE CA 2200
CLASSE CA 5200
MCINTOSH MC 205
CARY AUDIO CINEMA 7
OUTLAW AUDIO 755
LEXICON RX7
PASS LABS XA 30.8
BUTLER AUDIO 5150
ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005

With all that said, the amplifiers I mentioned above are the ones that in my opinion are worth mentioning. To make a long story short, there is NO 5 CHANNEL POWER AMP that sounds as good as a 3ch and 2ch amplifier combination. i have done both experiments and the truth is that YOU DO lose details and more channel separation, etc when you select a 5 channel power amplifier of any manufacturer.
My recollection of what each amp sounded like is as follows:

ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005 (great power and amazing soundstage. Very low noise floor, BUT this amplifiers NEEDS TO BE cranked up in order to fully enjoy it. If you like listening at low volume levels or somewhat moderate, you are wasting your time here. This amp won’t sound any different than many other brands out there at this volume. The bass is great, good highs although they are a bit bright for my taste)

NAD M25 (very smooth, powerful, but somewhat thin sounding as far as bass goes)
Bryston sst2(detailed, good soundstage, good power, but can be a little forward with certain speakers which could make them ear fatiguing at loud volumes)

Krell (fast sounding, nice bass attack, nice highs, but some detail does get lost with certain speakers)

rotel (good amp for the money, but too bright in my opinion)

cary audio (good sound overall, very musical, but it didn’t have enough oomph)

parasound halo (good detail, great bass, but it still holds back some background detail that i can hear in others)

lexicon (very laid back and smooth. huge power, but if you like more detail or crisper highs, this amp will disappoint you)

McIntosh mc205 (probably the worst multichannel amp given its price point. it was too thin sounding, had detail but lacked bass.

butler audio (good amplifier. very warm and smooth sweet sounding. i think for the money, this is a better amp than the parasound a51)

pass labs (very VERY musical with excellent bass control. You can listen to this for hours and hours without getting ear fatigue. however, it DOES NOT do well in home theater applications if all you have is a 2 channel set up for movies. The midrange gets somewhat "muddy" or very weak sounding that you find yourself trying to turn it up.

classe audio (best amplifier for multi channel applications. i simply COULDNT FIND a better multi channel amplifier PERIOD. IT has amazing smoothness, amazing power and good bass control although i would say krell has much better bass control)

Update: The reviews above were done in January 2015. Below is my newest update as of October 2016:

PS AUDIO BHK 300 MONOBLOCKS: Amazing amps. Tons of detail and really amazing midrange. the bass is amazing too, but the one thing i will say is that those of you with speakers efficiency of 87db and below you will not have all the "loudness" that you may want from time to time. These amps go into protection mode when using a speaker such as the Salon, but only at very loud levels. Maybe 97db and above. If you don’t listen to extreme crazy levels, these amps will please you in every way.

Plinius Odeon 7 channel amp: This is THE BEST multichannel amp i have ever owned. Far , but FAR SUPERIOR to any other multichannel amp i have owned. In my opinion it destroyed all of the multichannel amps i mentioned above and below. The Odeon is an amp that is in a different tier group and it is in a league of its own. Amazing bass, treble and it made my center channel sound more articulate than ever before. The voices where never scrambled with the action scenes. It just separated everything very nicely.

Theta Dreadnaught D: Good detailed amp. Looks very elegant, has a pleasant sound, but i found it a tad too bright for my taste. I thought it was also somewhat "thin" sounding lacking body to the music. could be that it is because it is class d?

Krell Duo 300: Good amp. Nice and detailed with enough power to handle most speakers out there. I found that it does have a very nice "3d" sound through my electrostatics. Nothing to fault here on this amp.
Mark Levinson 532H: Great 2 channel amp. Lots of detail, amazing midrange which is what Mark Levinson is known for. It sounds very holographic and will please those of you looking for more detail and a better midrange. As far as bass, it is there, but it is not going to give you the slam of a pass labs 350.5 or JC1s for example. It is great for those that appreciate classical music, instrumental, etc, but not those of you who love tons of deep bass.

 It is articulate sounding too
Krell 7200: Plenty of detail and enough power for most people. i found that my rear speakers contained more information after installed this amp. One thing that i hated is that you must use xlr cables with this amp or else you lose most of its sound performance when using RCA’s.

Krell 402e: Great amp. Very powerful and will handle any speaker you wish. Power is incredible and with great detail. That said, i didn’t get all the bass that most reviewers mentioned. I thought it was "ok" in regards to bass. It was there, but it didn’t slam me to my listening chair.

Bryston 4B3: Good amp with a complete sound. I think this amp is more laid back than the SST2 version. I think those of you who found the SST2 version of this amp a little too forward with your speakers will definitely benefit from this amp’s warmth. Bryston has gone towards the "warm" side in my opinion with their new SST3 series. As always, they are built like tanks. I wouldn’t call this amp tube-like, but rather closer to what the classe audio delta 2 series sound like which is on the warm side of things.

Parasound JC1s: Good powerful amps. Amazing low end punch (far superior bass than the 402e). This amp is the amp that i consider complete from top to bottom in regards to sound. Nothing is lacking other than perhaps a nicer chassis. Parasound needs to rework their external appearance when they introduce new amps. This amp would sell much more if it had a revised external appearance because the sound is a great bang for the money. It made my 800 Nautilus scream and slam. Again, amazing low end punch.

Simaudio W7: Good detailed amp. This amp reminds me a lot of the Mark Levinson 532h. Great detail and very articulate. I think this amp will go well with bookshelves that are ported in order to compensate for what it lacks when it comes to the bass. That doesn’t mean it has no bass, but when it is no Parasound JC1 either.
Pass labs 350.5: Wow, where do i begin? maybe my first time around with the xa30.8 wasn’t as special as it was with this monster 350.5. It is just SPECTACULAR sounding with my electrostatics. The bass was THE BEST BASS i have ever heard from ANY amp period. The only amp that comes close would be the jC1s. It made me check my settings to make sure the bass was not boosted and kept making my jaw drop each time i heard it. It totally destroyed the krell 402e in every regard. The krell sounded too "flat" when compared to this amp. This amp had amazing mirange with great detail up top. In my opinion, this amp is the best bang for the money. i loved this amp so much that i ended up buying the amp that follows below.

Pass labs 250.8: What can i say here. This is THE BEST STEREO AMP i have ever heard. This amp destroys all the amps i have listed above today to include the pass labs 350.5. It is a refined 350.5 amp. It has more 3d sound which is something the 350.5 lacked. It has a level of detail that i really have never experienced before and the bass was amazing as well. I really thought it was the most complete power amplifier i have ever heard HANDS DOWN. To me, this is a benchmark of an amplifier. This is the amp that others should be judged by. NOTHING is lacking and right now it is the #1 amplifier that i have ever owned.

My current amps are Mcintosh MC601s: i decided to give these 601s a try and they don’t disappoint. They have great detail, HUGE soundstage, MASSIVE power and great midrange/highs. The bass is great, but it is no pass labs 250.8 or 350.5. As far as looks, these are the best looking amps i have ever owned. No contest there. i gotta be honest with you all, i never bought mcintosh monos before because i wasn’t really "wowed" by the mc452, but it could have been also because at that time i was using a processor as a preamp which i no longer do. Today, i own the Mcintosh C1100 2 chassis tube preamp which sounds unbelievable. All the amps i just described above have been amps that i auditioned with the C1100 as a preamp. The MC601s sound great without a doubt, but i will say that if you are looking for THE BEST sound for the money, these would not be it. However, Mcintosh remains UNMATCHED when it comes to looks and also resale value. Every other amp above depreciates much faster than Mcintosh.

That said, my future purchase (when i can find a steal of a deal) will be the Pass labs 350.8. I am tempted to make a preliminary statement which is that i feel this amp could be THE BEST stereo amp under 30k dollars. Again, i will be able to say more and confirm once i own it. I hope this update can help you all in your buying decisions!

Enjoyed your last video WC.  I think we learn alot from you and about your process on those types of videos.
I know it is getting pretty specific, but I would be really curious if you can hear a difference between the premium black and regular green qkore wire on the same component (if you have the right terminations to try the comparison).
@maxwave I think you would need to check with Castello about the effect of using two of their grounding units.

In addition to what @ron17 said, I use the QKore and a CAD GC1 grounding block.
I have found additional benefit of grounding my preamp with both the QKore and CAD, but I am fairly confident Nordost does not recommend using two QKore ground lines, from the same or separate Qkore, to the same component as the effect will not be additive.
great stuff WC. and nice to ‘meet’ Teeka.
Hopefully you are able to get others in your room to listen and interview candidly.
@keithr thanks for your reply. i would not be so brazen in your assumptions, particularly in this case. consider it a friendly gut check. I’ll leave it at that.
curious to hear the behind the scenes and jay’s commentary. i imagine some of those presenters may have realized they were about to be seen by 30,000 viewers
Very excited to see some clips and commentary from this coming weekend. Enjoy there.
with all due respect, pls don’t call WC ‘crazy amp dude’ on WBF, essentially throwing him under the bus, and then come here posting seemingly innocuous posts after having posted why it is not surprising he was banned on wbf.

Congrats Jay. That is a beautiful beast with unparalleled customer service.

Two quick cents, I know you will be getting dozens of cents (and I know you research heavily so ignore if you already know of course!)....

- Plug that beast directly into the wall, not a qbase, power conditioner etc. It thrives from juice, ideally on its own dedicated circuit.

- While there are 4 usb on the back, the best is the dedicated usb driver that you may have ordered (~1500 euro option), the fifth port. Not sure if you have that option.

- Interestingly, given your enjoyment of Odin 1 pcs, I actually prefer an Odin 1 pc versus an Odin 2 pc to the Extreme. fwiw in my system

Fantastic you will be interviewing Emile. He (and his team) are pushing the boundaries of digital playback. And it only promises to get better, as you know as they continue to improve the Extreme ecosystem.

Congrats again. Enjoy

strange WC. barely any gap between stored files and streaming here. Emile has closed it significantly. I am sure Emile will help. Definitely try ethernet cable directly into Extreme without switch if you haven’t already. Enjoy!

hmmm. It will be interesting to get Emile’s insights.

Many big league systems including Emile’s own, I believe, express the gap is very close. Of course it helps to have LPSs on modem router switches. etc.  Could be network dependent. And as you say, the more resolving the system...

ah that is outstanding. 24/352.8 will sound incredible played locally on extreme

i downloaded one album at that caliber and it blew me away. wish we could stream at that quality

I fully believe u. The holy grail would be to make them comparable and to level the modem/router/networking playing field for all users given the current infinite combination of upstream streaming configurations. Taiko has a plan for this, from what i understand.  Hundreds of pages about this on other forums. Really looking forward to the interview!

On the YG front. Currently driving Sonja 2.2i w a pair of Simaudio 860a v2s with plenty of reserves into the mid 90 db range. I realize the amps are not inexpensive but together they cost less than half of the speakers, retail.  For 2.5x times the cost of my amps I sure hope the M10 would not only drive the Sonjas but significantly outperform them on every dimension.

Alot of fair points this page. What I like about this thread. good post psnyder

Hi Dave,

OCD Mike has his own youtube channel - OCD Hi-Fi Guy.  Jay appeared on one of his recent videos and they agreed to visit each other's rooms to evaluate/record additional material.  Agree, fun watching them both together.

Glad you were able to do the Roon vs Taiko Audio Software (TAS) comparison with OCD Mike.  Been using TAS, still in Beta, for over a year now and have not gone back to Roon. I do miss some of its functionality, but easy sacrifice for me for better SQ.

Very much looking forward to the full rollout/official version from Taiko of XMDS (to be the new software name) in the next month or two. I have faith the SQ will remain superior, perhaps even better, and hopefully has increased functionality as Jay mentioned in the video.

Man, I think a few folks have already mentioned - this is a primarily a two channel thread for over 5 year now going on 6. Many folks Ron17 and Zaks to name 2 have been really helpful already.

I absolutely wish you the best on your multi channel journey, but meanwhile Jay is pushing the envelope and expanding his sphere of influence in two channel, system setup and of course his youtube presence. It seems like your inquiry would be best suited for a private consult with Jay should he accept at this point. Or perhaps start new multi channel inquiry on Agon to tap the full knowledge base on this forum that may not follow this particular thread.

We still have some momentum here, albeit waning. We are losing regular contributors seemingly left and right. All the while, there is so much excitement, agitation and change happening whether on this forum, wbf, axpona, munich or future aspiring youtubers, all of which jay is talking about and could tilt the trajectory of future hi-end audio. Let’s keep the conversation going here on Jay’s journey and I still hold out the hope that this long thread doesn’t fizzle out and dry up, but I understand that could be its ultimate future. Ha, in denial. But I appreciate Jay keeping an eye on this thread still and posting. Especially as Mikey can opine for himself on other forums like WBF, whereas Jay cannot, for no reason that has ever been publicly articulated. Forums still matter in our sliver of universe.

Great presentation on that video. Well clipped and summarized.

Sounds like a speaker capable of shining especially w great supporting cast.

Best bass to date.  Wow.  That says a lot given what has come before it.

Wonder how much the 3060 and the Extreme etc factor into the evolution.

Congrats again Jay. High praise considering all that has entered and exited your room. I would be afraid to hear it.

Happy Birthday Jay!!

Hope you get a chance today to soak in and celebrate your successes, family and the many folks you have touched on this journey you have shared with all of us.

Thank you for that and best of luck going forward achieving your goals.

ha, so true.

Great video Jay.  Agree, especially on cable #5.

Question that came up,... within a given brand's cable line-up, say there are 4 or 5 levels, would you try to move up the line generally in synch (all scs, pcs and ics) over time. Or would you jump to the top sc as soon as possible, then as funds allow, slowly raise the bar on the ics and pcs?

I do like the approach of trying not to let the weak link cable in the system lag too far behind.

@clearthink

What has been your “contribution” to this thread exactly?  As some have already said, Jay has gone to great lengths to ensure transparency since day one. I and others have been learning and entertained by Jay for 5 years. I don’t give a rat’s a$$ that he has taken on a line or two. We are all adults and can make our own decisions.

Your only “contribution” to this thread below amounts to stone throwing, is patently false and by no means represents the opinion of all that follow this thread.

“It is now obvious, apparent, and indisputable that this has become a "sales thread" for Stromtank and what ever other products Jay decides to represent, promote, and sell”

haha nice work

20,000 posts, nearly 2 million views.

All generated by Jay’s efforts during his ‘free time’

@ricevs

time to listen to your own words above:

“This channel is entertaining for some.....but for some of us......we are coming back less and less as there is nothing to learn.”

So please, start your own thread for your own followers. I am glad you realize there is nothing left to learn here. So be respectful and exit. I for one have learned absolutely nothing from you (despite your multiple thousand word posts saying the same thing over and over), but I do not berate you, let alone the OP of this thread incessantly with my own ideas, products etc. And obviously this thread has never been and will never be remotely related to DIY. That has been obvious for years.  Know when to pack up the shop man.

and @cleeds, what’s your point? jay has not been hiding a thing from the beginning. We continue to be all adults. capable of making our own decisions, believe it or not. no need to disparage

w all due respect on the cartoon topic

best to quit while ahead.

cat can be an amazing companion

can we have a dog if we add a sub? or power conditioner?

Totally Jay. One of my dogs is my constant companion when I listen. She tries to push herself into the sweet spot.

epic shootout perhaps… congrats wc

no doubt gryphon and boulder confident

curious if/how they would describe their ultimate sonic goals similarly/differently at that level of components. of course would love to know their favorite server/speaker/cabling combos but no luck getting that intel for obvious reasons. that’s in part why i tune in here.  jay’s evaluations are incredibly valuable in that way

oh god... not eq. there are dozens and DOZENS of pages already on this thread dominated by a tiny number of contributors - about which, as Jay just stated, he is not interested, again, aside from cables and naturally components.

enjoy your visit to the west coast wc!! perfect weather here in the bay area this weekend. just enough fog

watched a long 90 min utube video of an audio publication visiting CH Precision. Alot of good info but it was one long reel without any headers, separation, outline etc. brutal

I really enjoy how Jay keeps things tight and short on specific topics. I can imagine a number of videos out of this Magico tour. so cool. looking forward to any footage however it is delivered and glad Magico is recognizing your hard work.

Agree. Most of us are here, and many for over 4 years, for Jay’s content and by extension support for his thread. Jay has always been transparent and upfront.

Gratuitous attempts to undermine his hard work and insinuate false narratives epitomizes disrespect toward the spirit of Jay’s journey and should have no place here.

are straight up ads allowed like that last post on agon onto established threads? honest question

@clearthink

your quote: “Why is Jay making a profit from these videos of cause disturbance to you that you would attack others?”

Can you substantiate your claim that Jay is making a profit?

Please enlighten us with any information or, as requested, stop making up sht and walk away.

As it appears the moderators deleted Cleeds similar unsubstantiated post, I assume you are on their radar as well.

Looking forward to the upcoming inside Magico videos.  Excellent

Just finished the first video finally.

Excellent work Jay and kudos to your filming and video ’crew’. Most professionally polished video on your channel to date imho

That video was jammed with great info. Really appreciated Alon’s explanation of the benefits of a sub as well as the diffraction issue and impact on frequency propagation (now worried about the corners in my speakers lol). He clearly has a gift for design but also was impressed by his articulate explanations on the array of more technical subjects and his passion for it which comes through in a charismatic engineer kind of way. As an engineer, that is relatively rare and definitely a compliment. Looking forward to the next drop.

My apologies for not knowing this.

Who then designs Magico speakers if not Alon and can someone point to information on this? Seems like a bold statement without support?

fair enough. but why did you delete your post about your respect for magico, consideration of their speakers and discussion/meeting Alon?  honestly confused.

Finally finished interview video. Wealth of information. Alon is a pleasure to listen to and the interview had a nice cadence to it. Great work facilitating and thanks for sharing.

While I have never owned Magico but have a preference for closed ’box’ designs, may need to try out. Or at least make the drive to have a listen.

His comment that it isn’t his place to tell another person how music should sound was particularly interesting to me.

Thought the description of the amps and methods for the shoot out were well done in the intro video .

Separately, my iphone has never sounded better listening to the ‘short’ videos today. lol but serious

One observation is the headroom of the S7s, seems to not have been maxed out yet. I feel this way about the ygs sonja 2.2is, but I am obviously biased

How much better did the M9s sound than the ‘best’ in your room to date Jay? Talk to us. We know u will, no rush of course.

I also preferred 2 & 3 over 1. But, of course, this is using my airpod pros or whatever through youtube. As perhaps the only user of 860a v2s following/participating on this thread at the moment (monos in my case), I can vouch that there is nothing threadbare in the midrange in my system listening to those same tracks. They sound vastly different (thankfully) than any of the 3 recordings in fact (I understand many of you have better headphone/etc setups to listen to these comps). And, I definitely enjoy comparing head to head through Jay’s recordings and agree with their value.

That all said, I cannot wait to hear the results of the reveal and will fully embrace the results if the 860a is the #1 amp in the order. I am definitely not in the camp of enjoying warmer sound, but I don’t know how many would actually describe themselves in that camp either on this thread. Also, viber, I agree a recording of those first two tracks using the 3060 would be helpful as a baseline/for the record going forward, fwiw.

Thanks again for the excellent shootout Jay.

Absolutely great video. With detailed commentary that really would inform decision making. Agree w the comment that the 860a v2 gives you a blank sheet of paper and opportunity to draw. I have heard it go through many evolutions here in my system.  And they, for me, continue to impress.

thanks again Jay.

Jay/WC/Jaywc/wcJ/whitecamaros/Best sound east of the Mississippi (sorry OCD Mikey). We all should be congratulating u on the website. That is such a HUGE achievement, the effort and outlay i can’t fathom and the looks are fantastic. One element I was most curious about before choosing mid or hi tier:

- level of access to your extra videos depending on the tiers of subscription. From what I infer “hi” tier has the most but how does that compare to mid vs low?

Congrats again on this next step

All subscribed and rolling these past few days. Already enjoying the extra video content and worth every penny, to me. Honestly, so many of us enjoy/have enjoyed, and learned from, your thread and content for so long, I feel like there should have been more monetary support along the way. so thanks. and looking fwd to all that is to come.

Simaudio similarly created a notably better amp w the 860av2 compared to the 860av1 and the 870a.  The 870a was retailing at $22k before being replaced by the $20k 860av2.  fwiw

fwiw I am in the mid-tier and am enjoying the extra videos, rankings etc. Everyone has their own budgets, of course, for me it is absolutely worth it as I enjoy Jay's commentary and opinions - and I am getting more of that from the subscription.  As like I mentioned before, I really like providing some monetary support for all the work Jay puts in every day. For me, I feel it is the least I can do given the 5+ years of info, knowledge sharing and entertainment on this thread, youtube and now on his website.  just imho
