MiniDSP SHD Studio as a pre-amp?

Hi, I am really interested in knowing from users how they feel this unit works as a pre-amp. Specifically the volume control and remote. I don't think it has gain, but does the up and down volume work smoothly, and how does the remote control work on it? Does it jump up or down too fast? I really like my Benckmark pre-amp, but with this unit in place, I would not be able to use it any longer, as the signal will be split into highs and lows on the output.
