Michell DensoDamp impressions

Category: Analog

I wanted to share my first impressions after treating my GyroSE with J.A. Michell DensoDamp. There isn't a lot of info on the product and I wanted to get some thoughts posted.

Firstly, application took longer than expected (a solid hour at least) and the material was a little hard to work with. Perhaps the warm so cal temps made the material a little tackier than normal. On the other hand, I think the temps made it a little easier to push the product into the crevices.

My immediate impression was that resolution was improved.

Pacing was also much better. The notes had about the same attack, but were let go faster. I didn't notice any problems before the application, but afterwards, the deck just seemed to present and let go of musical quanta faster and with less coloration. After comparison, the untreated GyroSE clearly had a tendency to sustain events longer than perhaps it should. I think this is attributable to the steel chassis storing and releasing more energy than it does now.

The soundstage moved back quite a bit and solidified behind the plane of the speakers (way behind). Conversely, it was also better illuminated.

I approached this with some reservations. Based on the material quality of the densodamp (dense, tacky, heavy) I would think the sound may become sluggish or dark, and because I don't think the gyro need to be any darker or smoother than it already is, I was afraid of over application. However, I found the opposite was true, I think it made the deck sound more agile and better paced.

Overall, the improvements wrought well exceed the $35 expense.

I should also note that while the deck was dissasembled I cleaned the bearing and re-lubricated with some Redline 75W90 gear oil left over from my last differential oil change.
