I went from the 2900 to the UDP1. It is clearly better with Redbook CDs but SACD and DVD-A are very close and, in my opinion, not worth the difference in price. I'm glad I bought the UDP1 but the 2900 is a bargain for what you get. I've never heard a modded 2900.
