If you want to stay vintage, get a Mac MX-110. You even get a nice phono section and FM tuner. Send them both to Terry DeWick for a tune up and you'll never look back.
I would recommend a McIntosh C42. I have one mated to my MC240 and have owned a dozen other preamps before settling on this one.
Compared to the (restored) MX110 I had in my system, the C42 has better dynamics, better transparency, deeper bass, with cleaner and more extended highs. The C42 is the same as the current C46 except for the lighting scheme.
