Marantz 3300 - Fanboy issues, buyer beware.....

I am looking to build a system for my son and considering the subject pre. for under $600. It’s currently working, and sells for 2x that elsewhere. I have three questions.

1.) What upgrades would be recommended?

2.) Any suggestions on who should do them?

3.) Should I just avoid this?

Thanks much!

I chased vintage Marantz receivers almost two decades ago.  Granted, $150 max would get you a Marantz 22XX series receiver in decent enough shape, but there would be an outlay of almost what you paid for the receiver to repair the receiver at some point down the line.  I stopped chasing.  Now you are talking electronics that are more than 50 years old.

Consider buying new, consider the Outlaw RR2160.  Other than buying speakers, there's nothing else to buy and you have all the options you need.

I realize it is outside your budget ($1000 vs $600).  Then again, I have my Outlaw receiver since 2006.
