Magnepan Ribbon Tweeter Amplification
My knowledge of amplifiers is not what many on this forum possess. I'm hoping some of you can point me in the right direction.
I've gone back to an active crossover setup, bi-amping my Magnepan 3.6/Rs. That plus some room treatments have rendered absolutely beautiful results. But I've heard that tri-amping can push the Magnepans into a realm of greater imaging. So I'm hoping for an amplifier recommendation that is somewhat specific in its criteria.
I've read many (so many!) other posts on Audiogon and Planar Asylum regarding this very topic, but they didn't really provide any suggestions I thought would work for me and most ended up devolving into a discussion of crossover points and slopes or focused on Class D plate amplifiers. I have a good handle on the crossover setup, and I'm not interested in DIY or plate amplifiers for this application. Anyway, here's the wish list...
Class A, solid-state, balanced inputs, 2-ohm stable, manufactured within the past 10 years, sub-$4,000 price tag.
I don't need big watts (probably <100 would be more than adequate), but I've heard it suggested that tube and SET amps don't have the top-end smoothness that this application requires. Are MOSFETs the way to go?
Additionally, my plan is to wire capacitors in series with the tweeters to help protect them from any form of destructive voltage. Is there a recommendation anyone has for a particular model/specs for a 1,700 Hz crossover point?
