Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

about 12-13 years ago i saw dianne reeves at the san fran herbst theatre, sat in 6 th row... at the end of the concert, she came back on for a second encore, with only acoustic guitarist, sang two songs without microphone, just natural sound in a moderate concert hall space

i will NEVER forget the sound of her voice and the guitar, what it sounded like when she sang soft, then loud, what the growth of the sound wave sounds like, what sounds of 'fff' 'sss' 'ttt' sound like when sung...

when i listen to any equipment/hifi now. this is one of the moments/sounds i refer to... to evaluate if something has the correct tonality, pitch, overall conveyance of the music

as has been mentioned and recommended often in posts here, i have really been enjoying kenny wheeler, especially what now? album with potter holland et al

lovely lovely music, wonderful recording

speaking of creed taylor, tonight i listened again to george benson’s weekend in la -- on it there is one track from his cti days -- ’ode to kudu’

i invite you to listen to that one on ’weekend in la’, then go back to hear the original track of that song (and a beautiful alternate take) on the early cti release of george benson’s ’beyond the blue horizon’ 1971

some of the best benson, and best jazz you will ever hear, imho

just brilliant, and utterly beautiful...

at sfjazz center, where i recently attended a couple of shows, they no longer check for vax status, nor are masks required

that said. masks are offered at every entrance for those that want them to wear during the performance

performers on stage do not mask (they never did, even earlier in the pandemic when audience vax status was being checked)... the venue is very large, recently built, has an excellent hvac system with presumably modern levels of air filtration

a warm hearted suggestion for jazz music lovers

the new joey alexander release, called ’origin’ is fantastic... chris potter on sax and wonderful israeli guitarist gilad hekselman etc etc
