Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

@curiousjim I bought a copy of Steve Gadd Band maybe 4-5 years ago and don't think I've even broken the shrink wrap yet! haha Guess I need to check it out.

@curiousjim Hands down my favorite pianist!  Is that an Amazon exclusive, I'm not familiar with it and nothing comes up on Discogs?

I'm relatively new to jazz (about 3 years) and was fortunate to amass quite a few (several hundred) records from a variety of artist from a local ebay seller.  They were from his dad's collection, and nearly all were in NM condition.  Sadly, he passed in December or early January.  But as I am going through them, I am finding some artist I really love.  Lately, I am really getting into Kenny Drew and Calvin Keys.

@curiousjim Yes, I just streamed it from Qobuz via Roon and it was unlistenable.  You are not alone.  If someone told me I had a damaged speaker then immediately played that track, I wouldn’t have argued with them.  As soon as I switched to a different artist all is right with the sound again.  Definitely a bad track and I can’t believe the artist would have released it like that.  Are you using Qobuz?  Maybe the problem is with them if you are.

@pjw81563 Definitely a couple of good ones there.  One that I don't see mentioned often and doesn't seem to get the love I think it deserves is Fantasia.

@mary_jo According to Larry David you're already 8 days past the appropriate cutoff date! 😂

@wharfy I see that’s on Steeplechase. I have yet to hear a bad Steeplechase album! I am slowly trying to collect most of them. It’s not cheap since I refuse to buy albums in less than NM unless they’re just so rare that I can't justify it.

@curiousjim Thanks for bringing up Red Garland, it had been far too long.  Enjoying right now!

So this came in the mail today.  Three Blind Mice never seem to disappoint.

There are LOTS of earlier editions dirt cheap on eBay. I just grabbed the first edition that covers LPs for $5.19 shipped. Just go there and search

The Penguin Guide to Jazz on LP, CD, and Cassette

or

The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings if you’re wanting a newer edition.

@curiousjim You can NEVER go wrong with a Kenny Drew day!  I already have 4 KD albums cleaned and ready to go for the upcoming long weekend!

@pjw81563 Measurements have their place, but when someone relies solely on them, I ain't buying what they're selling.  And there was one review in particular that sealed the deal for me, when their results were so diametrically opposed to what I had personally experienced.

@curiousjim I haven't heard that, (I will now), but recently saw this and just bought it on a whim and it's surprising enjoyable.  With bass, percussion, brass and piano as well, the accordion isn't overwhelming.

@curiousjim I ordered An Evening With Ron Carter & Richard Galliano last night on Discogs, unfortunately I won’t have it to enjoy over the long weekend.  But my copy of Brilliant Corners arrived today and just finished getting a bath and is now sitting on the mono TT ready to go later this evening.

Daniel Humair: Cool Trading with Attila Zoller and Mike Formanek - YouTube

Wow -- this is great!!!!

Do you happen to know whether this group released any recordings?

Attila Zoller – Memories Of Pannonia

Attila Zoller – Overcome (Live At The Leverkusen Jazz Festival)

These two have the same members.  I think this is about it though.

@wharfy If I had to settle on a single Kenny Drew album (and thank goodness I don't) it would probably be Dark Beauty.  It's easy to find to stream.

@pjw81563 Playing it way too loud at my desk at work right now hoping the phone doesn't ring! haha

@wharfy I’ve heard they are due to being pressed on virgin vinyl. How true that is I can’t say. I do know I have been very happy with them. Some of the absolute best sounding records I own are from Three Blind Mice which are Japanese. YMMV

@mahgister @stuartk Lionel Hampton is another who grunts and groans nonstop.  Love his music, but man it can be distracting at times! 😂
