Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

@acman3
I think you were talking about me .
It was the London Jazz Scene in particular.
I like the Nubya Garcia and the Ezra collective that you posted
Here is another interesting group Kokoroko from Sofar Sounds.

KOKOROKO are a collective of young musicians led by trumpeter Sheila Maurice-Grey. They specialize in a soul shaking, horn fueled sound with West African roots and inner London hues.

 Here is another Album that just blows My doors off.... very unique and different. It is quite a journey to listen to . The Miles Davis "Jack Johnson" album and this one are my new Favorites.

Enjoy !

Both of these are best played kind of loud IMO. The dynamics and bass are awesome....for the time.
@rok2id
wonder why ?
Hmmmmmmm, let's see.  They can't play?
Sure. You just keep telling yourself that

Please try this .be patient and listen to the whole album
it was put together in 2017 from the Jazz Scene in London around that time. They have definitely have expanded from the Jazz Standard.
At least it shows you the current ever evolving jazz scene, and even if you do not care for it , I do think that you WILL find it interesting.
I have it on Vinyl . it is a great recording. I like to play it a little  loud......
It has killer deep bass with definition.
O10. It has one of your new favorite groups . It is the last song
Album is :

Two that are in my top 10

This first one is so cool. I love that 1970s guitar sound. Herbie Hancock is on here too . Someone said this is some early Jazz fusion.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=up9yWDl0jBc

My 2nd one is also from 1974. Herbie Hancock is the producer & Composer.
You can put both of these albums on crank it up a bit , relax and go on a Journey

I have an original 1974 release of this Album...still has the shrink wrap on it. It has never been opened.

Enjoy
@frogman
Thank You for the link....Yes, I have the 200g Re-issue of that Album.
It is Great, but IMO It doesn’t quite have that UNIQUENESS. There is a little too much Synth going on there.
The Miles Davis Jack Johnson and the Herbie "Deathwish" , just have that unique Quality about them that sounds so "Out There " or Raw or On The Edge, when it comes to Style.......They do NOT sound like anything else
I understand  what you mean Frogman, but did you know that  Herbie Hancock played on the Entire Jack Johnson record. As a matter of fact I let my good buddy borrow the jack Johnson record, as he sets up my cartridges on my TT for me .
When I came back in a couple of weeks to pick up the TT.
I asked him what he thought about Miles Davis Jack Johnson .
He said , man I thought that you gave me the wrong record at firstg, becuase it sounded so different
What about Miles Davis , Big Fun. It is "Out There " also
Take Care
Merry Christmas

They do NOT sound like anything else

Mercifully.
The old Jazz Standard gets kind of boring, don't you think ?
Do you notice that most Jazz of today has moved away from this.
I wonder why ?
If you switch to youtube music (costs more) , It will let you pick a higher bitrate for streaming :)
Youtube Music allows you to stream at a higher bit rate. It comes with Youtube Premium
I use HDMI out of my PC to McIntosh MX155 .It sounds pretty good.
I also use Roku Ultra. can do Pandora Youtube etc also 4K stuff or anything on ROKU, and mind you , the choices  on ROKU are almost endless. Of course my vinyl sounds better.
@rok2id
I have the Marantz CD6007 on order
I have owned that exact model . Probably one of my favorite sounding players. It presents with a slightly warm, ,but detailed weighty sound IMO
Never analytical or dry sounding.
Great bass drive ,with a slightly vivid or forward sound as compared to the older Marantz cd players.
It will draw you in ...Congrats on the purchase . Enjoy

I also noticed the distortion. I wonder what’s up with that ?
Here is Solomon Burke with Derek Trucks.

It seems the guitar shares the spotlight here
