Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

A lot of companies have a signature sound and Hegel definitely has one. It’s not the amount of watts as what the whole chain of electronics that makes them. I bet you haven’t used 100 watts since you bought your H390, unless you’ve really cranked up.

BTW, I have the H390 as well and am extremely happy with it.  Having said that, with the H590 for sale at half price,  I wonder what the used ones go for.

@stuartk

Out of curiosity, what speakers and cables are you using?

As I’m sure you know, I have the KEF’s, but the rest is Rocket 88 cables assembled by Audio Advisor and my PC is the Pangea, 9SE- MKll.

Listening to The Herbie Nichols Trio,   Herbie Nichols Trio.  1966 recording at RVG studios.

Hey guys,

Having never seen a small, live jazz band, I have a question.  When you go to an indoor, live concert of a trio, quartet, quintet, how loud is the volume?

Thanks.

@mahgister

 Been listening to Smulyan all day today and one album is better than the next.  I can see why you like his work.

I’m listening to The Chic Corea Electric Band,  The Future Is Now.

A wonderful live recording just released last week!

@alexatpos

A Gasser is an excellent choice!

 I truly enjoy listening to albums like this where I can imagine that I am in the joint where they are playing.

Are there any Chick Corea fans here?
There’s a new (6 months old) album from The Chick Corea Elektric Band called The Future Is Now and it’s really pretty good.

No big deal, I just threw it out there.  Is it his best album, no, but it’s new and not some horrible miss mash of the dregs that fell on the floor either.

Just don’t get me started on the “ Beatles song”!

Yeah, today was also a Kenny Drew day, with Come Sunrise on the box now.

As @jdougs  says, “You can never get enough Kenny Drew”.

While I’m usually not big on groups led by bass players, I’ve glistening to Niels Henning Orsted Petersen. The first album I listened to was Trio One and it was definitely what I expected, very bass heavy, but the second album,  The Trio, has Oscar Peterson and Joe pass in the trio.

Needless to say, it’s a good listen.

Stay warm.

@jdougs

There’s a bunch of them.  Some louder than others, but.  Just yesterday, I was listening to Bud Powell and my wife walked into the room and asked if that noise was the audience and I responded with, I wish.  I don’t understand it, you’d think they’d edit it out before the record gets released.

Sigh.

@mksun

I like it!
Never heard her before, but I sure will look for more tomorrow.

This dreary Saturday morning I’m starting with Derek Smith, High Energy.

 Another underrated piano player,

IMHO.

I appreciate all your suggestions and listen to most, if not all of them.  Man I wish I had more than a Sony Walkman and later an IPhonr 4s when I drove.

Until today, I’d never heard of these guys and they’re right up my alley.

@pjw81563

I am happy to say All Night Long, is on Qobuz and I am happily listening to it now.  What a great group of musicians!

@stuartk

Sad to say, Tin Tin Deo, doesn’t seem to be on Amazon or Qobuz, but I listened to the first two cuts on YouTube.

I’m listening to a new album (2024) by Marta Sanchez called Perpetual Void. It’s not an album that I will listen to again, but some of you might like it.

Am I the only one who didn’t know there was a “New” Oscar Peterson collection this year? “A Night With Oscar Peterson” It’s on Qobuz and Amazon Music. It also has 98 cuts!

What’s odd is it’s 24/192 on Amazon and 16/44.1 on Qobuz.

Another new to me group is Hendrix Meurkens and the title that caught my eye is “The Jazz Meurkengers”.

Really diggin’ it.

@acman3

Always a pleasure to hear Kenny Clark and Sonny Fortune. Did they ever play together?

Listening to a brand new album (2024).

Vid Sketa,  First Step.

Right up my alley.

@stuartk

And PM has so many albums to choose from that you can listen to one every day and go a month or two without hearing the same one twice.😁

@pjw81563

Just got around to listening to the Soren Bebe Trio and this weekend, I’ll be listening to more. 🎶

Listening to Warren Vache,  Dream Dancing. And maybe a few more titles.😁

Have a bad headache, so I’m listening softly to Charles Lloyd,  The Sky Will Still Be There Tomorrow.

Just stumbled upon an album Jazz Audiophile, Just Relax Jazz. It’s actually quite pleasant. Has anyone else heard this album before?

Another fun album that’s out there  is the Mary Poppins soundtrack by The Duke Ellington Orchestra. From 1963.

@mahgister

I listened to a couple of Jazz Audiophile albums this morning and they were both a fun listen.

@pjw81563

I’m listening to The Montreal Tapes now and I am throughly enjoying it.  I plan on listening to the other one, dated 1996/1997 next.😁

I have been listening to Tete Montoliu all day today. I never realized that he had or played on so many albums.

@mahgister

I’m not sure there is a bad Eddie Daniel’s album. Clarinet or Sax, always a good performance.
