Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

My wife came home last night with a Russell Malone CD for me.  I’m listening to it now and I must say it is pretty good.

@pjw81563

I got my CDL in 1980, drove mostly straight trucks until about 15 years ago when I changed jobs for a company that everything from pick ‘‘em ups to drill rigs.  I gave up my CDL 3 years ago because my neck was so bad I couldn’t take hours of bouncing.😟. But the three things I miss are driving at night, listening to music and podcasts and stopping in the middle of nowhere and seeing the Milky Way!

@ho249

I listened to “The View From Here” and liked it.  Also listened and liked “Candid Kyle”

https://youtu.be/7zmi2LJqfrQ?si=ZoR_kSRdKl2lOrWq  Live version of the first song.

Thanks @ho249

I have to run some errands, but I’ll definitely check him out later.

@pjw81563

Leo was a superlative baritone sax player who succumbed to heart failure at just 36 years old.

How horrible!

People do stupid things every day that we never hear about, but if they’re halfway famous…

@pjw81563

I’m listening to Bill Jennings & Leo Parker,  Billy In The Lions Den.  Definitely not a good recording, but an easy to listen to album.

@jafant

Al DiMeola

I was just given 25+ of his albums.  Which should be the first one I listen to?

@pjw81563

Great find! I had never heard of this.

For more great baritone players check out Ronnie Cuber, Pepper Adams, Serge Chaloff, and Hamiet Bluiett.

Thanks.  There’s a couple you mentioned that I’ve never heard of and you know how much I like exploring!

Can you imagine Jaco and Al playing together in a band?  The poor drummer would spontaneously combust trying to keep up!

Sorry @acman3,  that is a definite no for me as well. FWIW, my wife walked by and  said WTF? So that’s another no. While I am the music lover in the house, neither one of us likes the disjointed cacophony that others do.
Like my mom used to say, You Can’t Tap Your Toes It.

Starting my day with The Gerry Mulligan Quartet,   What Is There To Say?

Thinking Coltrane next.

@stuartk

I got started listening to AD too late. Listened to 1 1/2 albums and went to bed.  I have a feeling it’s going to take a while.😁

@acman3

”We’ll be back with more stuff.”  Said Chuck Barris when he went to break, used to crack me up along with when Gary Owens was on the show.

@mahgister

I spent Four hours working on my computer today.  The computer is plugged into a 25 year old receiver that is using a pair of small bookshelve  speakers that are at least 30 years old.  As a near field system, it sounds great!

If your system makes you happy and my system makes me happy, that’s all that matters!

@stuartk

I have and it’s excellent!

RE: Chicago, have you heard Leonid and Friends?

Hey @frogman

Michael Brecker is one of my favorites and a couple albums are on my regular playlist.  Out of curiosity,  what’s your favorite album of his?

@mahgister

I’m with you. I am not a fan of Zorn or klezmer,  but I do like some fusion like the early Weathet Report, say the first four-five albums.

@mahgister

I can listen to Michael Brecker all day long, and have.
Having said that, I haven’t been able to get through a Becker Brothers album.

Maybe it’s just me?

@frogman

Holy Cow,  110 entries!  I think I have 11 M. Brecker albums myself and maybe 14 of the the brothers albums. They are far from my favorites.  I need to stream a couple of Randy Brecker albums and see what he’s like by himself.

Oh crap,

 I just reread the list the 110 was just the A-B part of the list!

Can we say prolific??

So I just got 6 John Zorn CD’s from the library. I tried to listen to them. Really I did! I guess I just don’t like that kind of jazz.

Oh well.

@frogman
You wouldn’t happen to know if there is a CD set of the Brecker brothers and Horace Silver bootleg?  Maybe I looked in the wrong place, but I didn’t find it on Amazon or Qobuz.

Thanks.

Thanks for the reply @frogman

While I’m not a fan of YouTube’s sound quality and commercials, it’s absolutely amazing how much is out there!

Listening to,  Clifford Brown & The Max Roach Quintet,  Verve Jazz Masters 44.

I might have to start collecting the Jazz Masters series.  I haven’t heard a bad one yet.

@pjw81563

You are correct, the Reference 5’s have two rear ports that come with two different size foam inserts. The longer ones give you a tad less base and the shorter ones give you a tad more.  I’m using one of each and have all the base I want.

Listening to Erroll Garner,  Afternoon Of An ELF.

I think I’ll be buying a few more of his albums.

It is always sad when the world loses someone so young!  Michael Brecker 1949-2007.

Cancer Sux!

@frogman and all,

Does anyone know what happened to the Documentary?  I for one would be interested in seeing it.

Listening to Verve Jazz Masters 51.  Blossom Dearie.

What a well recorded, fun album.

Finally getting my speakers replaced! So my original speakers are boxed up and waiting for the truck with my new speakers.

So I’m going through withdraws!

@alexatpos

So last January a tweeter went out on one of my KEF Reference 5’s and today, 10 months later, the issue should be resolved 🤞🏻🤞🏻

I’ll report back later.

Oh and the backs are @32” from the front wall and the front of the speakers are 48” from the wall. Both are 42” from the side walls.

I’m sure there’s better out there, but the 5’s are making me happy now.😁

@pjw81563

Sorry if I didn’t make myself clear. In January I lost a tweeter.  KEF made me send them the whole speaker (on my nickel!). They replaced the Uniq driver and they sent it back (on their nickel). There was a crack in the finish when the speaker came back and some weird discoloration at the bottom also.when all was said and done, the remade both speakers and I got them yesterday, after over 10 months of back and forth…There’s a bunch more to the story, but now I have new speakers to break in and enjoy.

Someone mentioned Teddy Edwards a little while back and today I listened to a few of his albums.  Midnight Creeper is simple and wonderful.  Smooth Sailing was also good.  Didn’t quite finish Wise In Time, but I will.

@alexatpos

What a tasty album!  Good Gravy is such an upbeat live performance, even the audience sounds like they’re having fun as well.

Great suggestion!

@rok2id

I’ve seen that video before and it makes me smile. Not that it’s comedic, but because when I started my audio journey, I had twenty watt Singer(?) amps. By the eighties, you had to hundreds of watts per channel and now if you look at some of the uber high end amps, they put out over a thousand watts a side!

And here I am with 90 dbs speakers that rarely go over 90 db and an amp that puts out 250 watts a side.

@rok2id

What cha got now, speakers, room size, budget and what do you want to change concerning the presentation?

I’m going to see how many of the Verve Jazz Master’s albums I find and listen to.

Starting with #1, Louis Armstrong.
