Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

Whew!!! Glad to hear that. I thought it was the band backing Mary Jo’s choir.
:---)) lol, I think you were close enough...

Ahahah, that’s a good one but for the moment I thought...you know what. Don’t you dare doing that because if you do, I will track you down and when I find you, will torture you for sure...:--))
Music has healing power. I really needed it. That Foreigner's was great. I used to listen it a lot, long time ago.

mary_jo is off for a while

One of my first "finding love for jazz" tune. Art Pepper, The Prisoner.

It makes me think that one is always a prisoner of something. Such kind of captivity lasts forever. Too long to be recognized. Dug to deep to be digged out.

An interesting conversation has been taking part here ...so will just shortly jump in here and jump out (it’s good for muscles), just to say hello.

First, Orpheus, I am sorry to hear of what you are going through. But I am glad that you are receiving the treatment for I have witnessed that proper treatment can do a lot.

Besides, judging by your conversation with Fro, I am certain that you are a tough cookie in this one too. ; ) I wish you all, all well.

Thank you all for sharing great music.

acman, I so like that one, it sounds like the music for the movie with all the dramatic points one story needs. Thanks for that.
fro, I have just printed out your last post...one has to contemplate over it. Ignore the hiccup in case if it occurs.
I am glad that you like David Benoit, fro.

Plas Johnson is now in my jazz book...

Eli "Lucky" Thompson indeed plays Deep Passion with deep passion.

I have never thought that I would actually cherish the music of the guy with the name - Thompson. Unfortunately in Croatia we have a singer with the same name and who highlights all his song with strong patriotism (but avoids to pay taxes), flirting with the fascism at the same time. Sadly to say that  in a country that is based on anti-fascism and which has given a strong resistance to Nazism in World War II, the guy is quite popular.

’Big’ John Patton – Spiffy Diffy, great!

Thank you Orpheus for Johnny Smith, I appreciate it and really like it. Impossible to fail with such great players. : )

Fred Jackson, Teena Hootin’ `N Tootin’, huh, thumbs up. As if the instrument cries, it makes me sad.

Such a good music. You all are not normal.

Not.

But who wants to be normal? And what is normal after all.

Wish you nice afternoon with the good music by your side.

I surely know what I will listen today.
Jeez Louise! Precisely my point. And actually it does not refer to chamber music. 'Chamber music' is just an album title.

Miles would still be the greatest, even if he just stands there with his trumpet, does nothing, blowing into nothing. Years active:
  • 1944–1975
  • 1980–1991
Hell, I would be dead after two years performing. The man did so much for the music, that he can surely afford whatever damn he wants to afford. Period.

Sidetracked by dark and calm sound of cello being successfully opposed to the bright and vivacious sound of kora, I'm posting Chamber Music - album by Ballake Sissoko and Vincent Segal

No need for melodrama. Nothing is destroyed. Time changes, music stays. Who wants to dig out good stuff such as good old jazz and bring it out to the open, will do it and enjoy it. Who doesn’t, will die in blissful ignorance. Everybody happy.

"I think The Jazz Queen of Croatia used to write for Pravda.

we will crush you!!!"

Too late, you are already being assimilated.

Any resistance is futile.

nsp, the video you have posted is not available. Do you by any chance have any other link on the same song?

"AAUUGGHH !!!!!!!"

Interesting song title. However, the link on the song clip is missing.
That is some serious cra...I mean jazz, fro...

Today, early in the morning, the calm clip from my TV (forgot to turn off the damn thing)...I almost fell off my bed...

I really do not know why it took them that long...they seem to be very lively and fast moving.
Orpheus, the Lindy hop guy at 00:53 in video is definitely my man...: )) An interesting move...
Orpheus, it is the same everywhere. From good old times the only thing what is left is 'old', meaning, we, being old(er) now.

: ))  The Rahsaan Roland Kirk -- BLACKNUSS...this must be "the new jazz"...

"Dark Eyes" (Russian song Очи чёрные)

Lyrics:
written by Ukrainian poet Yevhen Hrebinka

(translation by Peter Farnbank)

"Oh, these gorgeous eyes, dark and glorious eyes,
Burn-with-passion eyes, how you hypnotise!
How I adore you so, how I fear you though,
Since I saw you glow! Now my spirit’s low!

Darkness yours conceal mighty fires real;
They my fate will seal: burn my soul with zeal!
But my love for you, when the time is due,
Will refresh anew like the morning dew!

No, not sad am I, nor so mad am I;
All my comforts lie in my destiny.
Just to realise my life’s worthiest prize
Did I sacrifice for those ardent eyes!"

pjw is in the mood, I like that.

orpheus,
for the scratchy records, that is understandable from your side.

But I like them, I am quite nostalgic for old times (they remind me of them) and I am found of imperfections.

I guess I am not true audiophile.

mahgister, that Over the Rainbow is often on my play list. Love that simplicity.

...wow, that's a great Lullaby, Orpheus. I thought that only A. can post clips like this.

Also, I am sure that you are aware of it -  you have a touch for good story writing. Your memories that are conjured up by the song. You should write memoirs. Memoirs like that.

#so jazzy
Mnogo hvala (’many thanks’ in Croatian) Orpheus for the Lily song. You are getting more and more familiar with my taste in music. If you just keep on going like this, I might not need A. for the music anymore.

;)

That Bey Sisters I would not listen even if my teddy bear's life would depend on it.

Wynton is the man, who the hell said that he could not play? (rhetorical question)

In case if you would need it...

How about Audio Science (the name exists/son from one actor)...

I just knew that you guys, as true audiophiles, would be delighted with this name.

No need to thank me.
You’re welcome.
English is fine, as long as you do not teach History since you do not know the difference between nazism and communism.
Rok, you gotta be kidding me man...From your previous statement I guess that you equal the ideas of communism with the regime of Stalin in Soviet Union. Communism in it's true definition (moneyless, stateless, classless) never existed. What was in former SSSR was the abuse of communism ideas. Of course, the capitalism benefited from such scenario. People think that they would live like in North Korea with no possibility for individual freedom if they would embrace communism. Actually, the ideas of moneyless, stateless and classless society will never happen. It's just not in human nature. In human nature is: exploit, abuse, conquer, destroy, enslave. So no worries.

Let's get back to jazz...

....great clips pjw and that Moontrane is my kind of jazz...

Acman
/// All forms of government fail because we as a species are selfish.///

So true.
pjw...

///Duane was a rare melodist and a dedicated student of music who was never evasive about the sources of his inspiration. "You know," he told me one night after soaring for hours on wings of lyrical song, "that kind of playing comes from Miles and Coltrane, and particularly Kind Of Blue. I've listened to that album so many times that for the past couple of years, I haven't hardly listened to anything else." ///

You see, he is also listening only Miles and Coltraine. Somebody say something now against people who listen Majls and Koltrajn only...

: )
///mary-jo, in America, pronounced "Merica", the vast majority of people are total morons when it comes to politics, and they bandy about words like "Socialism", and "Communism" without a clue as to the actual definition of the words. We "Mericans" have been taught those are bad words, by the people in Washington, and we always believe what the people in Washington DC tell us. That's why they can rob us and loot the treasury; by the way, they punish snitches like me; maybe that's why the citizens choose to stay dumb.///

Orpheus, have nothing to add. The same here.
//Oh was not aware that you live in the Balkan’s. Shipping from there would not be worth it.//

Lol, that was funny. Man, we are in the middle of nowhere...

Thanks Ale for the good words.
Alex’s invitation/proposal for you guys, stands for me too, if you would be anywhere near Split, Croatia, feel free to contact me. I will gladly welcome you/show you around.
