Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

@acman3

You wouldn’t happen to know what album 1981 is on? I looked on Qobuz and Amazon Music and couldn’t find it.

Thanks.

@acman3

I bummed.  I bought a streamer so I wouldn’t keep buying CD’s, but “The Beliver” isn’t on Amazon Music or Qobuz.

Oh well.

Listening to Ronnie Bedford,   Just Friends.  Featuring Tommy Newsom, Bill Charlap, & Peter Huffaker.

@stuartk

How have I never heard John McLaughlin?  I don’t have a single CD or even a tune that he’s played on in my collection.

What a huge rock I’ve been under!

Well let’s see.  I have heard the Mahavishnu Orchestra. I have at least two copies of Bitches Brew.  I have a couple of Al DiMeola albums.

 I’m listening to “ The Essential John McLaughlin” ant it has something from Shakti, Mahavishnu, Pavo de Lucia & Miles Davis, Carlos Santana, The London Symphony Orchestra +.  Wow his styles are all over.From Jeff Beck like to soft jazz.

Did he play on any Santana albums?

 I just started The Complete EmArcy recordings and so far A+!

You guys are incredible?

Having motivation problems this morning and am quietly listening to Paul Moer,  The Contemporary Classics Of The Paul Moer Trio.

Sonny Rollins is definitely on my top ten list. And the good news is that there are so many examples of his work that were recorded, we can listen to a different album every day for almost three months without repeating!

@ho249

I have been listening to Peter Beets for quite some time. He has three albums that make me smile and tap my toe. They are  New Trio, New York Trio-Page Two and New York Trio-Page Three.  Very upbeat, very bouncy.

@stuartk

I have no idea when the first time I heard something on the ECM label, Blue Note or Verve for that matter, but all three labels have a ton of well recorded, good sounding recordings.

@pjw81563

You absolutely right.  After what we did to end the Asian part of the war,  I am so glad that music was allowed to help with the healing process.

War Is Hell.

As we all know, I’ve been living under a rock, so I can say I’d never heard of ECM reversing the phase on all their recordings. I have heard of it being done, but as an exception, not the rule. And I for one never understood the thought process behind it.

Hey guys,

What are your thoughts on Tina Brooks as a tenor sax player?

I’ve been listening to several albums today.  Minor Move is a great example.

@stuartk

I started the Tina topic, because I thought he was fun to listen to. I also like pretty much any tenor sax as long as it’s smooth and doesn’t squeak and squawk too much. But then again, that’s how I feel about all jazz.

But that’s just me.

The more I listen to Billy Cobham, the more I like him.

Listening to Compass Point, Disks 1 & 2.

@czarivey

Im listening to Bohren & Der Club Of Gore, Sunset Mission and the first cut could be the background music in any old detective movie.

”I saw her walk by. She was on a mission and I was going to help her find her way”.  Actually the whole album could be the background music for Blade Runner 2049.

Listening to Gene Ammons,  Boss Tenor.

There’s a slight echo on some the tracks, that makes his horn sound almost haunting!

And speaking of Ben Webster, I just got 11 CD’s from the local library. I know what I’m listening to Monday and…

Listening to Recorded Live At Bubba’s,   Sonny Stitt, Eddie ‘Lockfaw’ Davis, Eddie ‘Sweets’ Edison, Eddie Higgins wand more.
What a great group. What a great CD!

I guess I should have listed the Ben Webster albums,

Ben And The Boys.

Verve Jazz Masters #43.

Jazz ‘Round Midnight.

Stormy Weather.

King Of The Tenors.

Soulville.

Gerry Mulligan Meets Ben Webster.

Birdland 1952.

Cottontail,  The Best Of Ben Webster.

Ben Webster, The Verve Years.

I also got three from Avishai Cohen.

Duende.

Big Vicious.

Introducing Triveni.

@pjw81563

So what’s the name of PM’s first album?

Paul Motian's debut album as a leader was with ECM and all of his ECM sessions, as well as Kenny Wheeler's I have and I like them.

Oh and KW’s first?

@ho249

I’m listening to "Jimmy Giuffre 3, 1961" now. With 17 more tracks to go, I’ll have to get back to you with my thoughts.

@pjw81563

I bet that was a great show!

@curiousjim Billy Cobham is an excellent drummer, whom I have had the pleasure of seeing live in a trio setting with bassist Ron Carter and Donald Harrison on tenor.

Cobham's first studio album as a leader, Spectrum, is one of my favorite jazz/rock fusion albums and on my desert island list

@pjw81563

I thought "dull mood music" pretty clear. But I can add more adjectives.

Boring, sleep inducing, uninspired "guitar twiddling" background music for calls on hold, elevator music, dentist office music.

😁😆😂🤔🥸🎶😉🤣

@ho249

I’m sorry to say that 1961 isn’t my cup of tea or Rocks glass full of Bourbon.

Honest sir, I really was going to get my Jazz Listening License renewed!😁

@ho249

No worries.  I’m still in my happy place, listening to Ben Webster, so nuthin’ or nobody can bring me down.

@alexatpos

Thanks for all the great suggestions! I have the Ben and Peterson album and the Hawkins one, but the rest are now on my list and will be enjoyed by the end of the week!

Thank you again!

@stuartk

It’s probably the best part of retirement 😁

Yeah until recently, I’ve been listening to jazz just a very small amount.  YellowJackets, Weather Report, Earl Klugh, Bob James, Rippingtons.  But as far as the Rabbit Hole I’ve jumped into head first,  OMG,  so many names, so little time.

I’m listening to Horace Parlan, Up & Down. A great album IMO. He has played with many, but I’ve only found a small number of albums where he’s the main man.

@pjw81563

I am listening to “The Kid And The Brute” now and it’s fantastic!  I’ll try and get to the other two tomorrow or this weekend.

Thank you!

@stuartk

I just found your All Music post.  Thanks,  this is the reason I bought a streamer! I’m going to see how many I can listen to this weekend.

Thank you!

@alexatpos,

I have Desert winds and it’s a keeper.  The other two are on my weekend list.😁
