Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

Listened to Peter Erskin, Peter Erskin.  Thanks @acman3 .

Listening to Kenny Drew Trio, Kenny Drew Trio now.

Morning started off with Paquiro D’Rivera, Geoff Eales and now Hank Mobley.

Just got 4 Blue Michell albums, so I know what I’ll be listening to this afternoon. 😁😁

Listening to Victor Feldman,   Suite Sixteen.  Nice album, but I’ll be moving on after it is finished.

Just listened to Brian Bromberg, Thicker Than Water and Brian Bromberg Plays Hendrix.

Just popped up on Qobuz. Joe Chambers, Dance Kobia.  2023

So far, so good!

Listening to Robert Glaper,   My Element.  I think I like it, but it’s starting off much to hectic for morning music. I’m going to have to try another album after this.

@rok2id

I was going through some old posts and found yours about Lena Horne, Being Myself. You were right, Fantastic!

Today has been a Wynton Marsalis day.  Currently playing is The Magic Hour.

Happy happy birthday and here’s to many many more years of sharing our passion!

Another favorite of mine, Lee Morgan, The Sidewinder. Still sounds fresh every time I listen to it.

@christianb5s4

<<Currently listening to the album Balanced by Jan Harbeck Quartet.>>

You mentioned Balanced and I’ve never heard it before, so I found the album in HR and started playing it, but I couldn’t get past the third track, (Silver String Valley), the sax sounded like a crunchy brown paper bag! Is it just my system? It’s about 6:30 pm here and sometimes my power is horrible, so that’s why I’m asking.

Jim

Oh and I’m glad you liked the Paul Desmond video. I watched it with great envy. I tried desperately to learn guitar in the last century and never got better than bad! So when I see a video of someone making it look easy, I flash on how hard I tried and how I could never move my fingers, I get a little jealous.

@ho249

What a great album Etudes is. I will definitely have it on my Sunday playlist.

Thanks for sharing.

@pjw81563

I listened to five of Mitchell’s albums back to back and could have listened to more except life got in the way.😁 I’ve never thought about making a list of favorite trumpet players, but if I did, Blue Mitchell would definitely be on that list.

@jdougs

Thanks for the reply. There have been a few times where I hear something and wondered if it’s me, my power or my equipment. Oh and I’m currently using Qobuz and Amazon HD.

Hey all,

This is bugging me. @christianb5s4 posted an album by the Jan Harbeck Trio, Balanced.  So I listened to it and in the third song, Silver String Valley, the sax sounds like it’s very over modulated. I described it as sounding like a crunchy brown paper bag. Christian said it sounded good to him, so at first I thought it was my power, but I just listened to it again this morning and it sounded the same. Both times, it was played at less than 60-66 dbs, so not loud.
Can you guys take a listen and let me know what you hear?

Thanks

@pjw81563

Lol, I wish there was streaming when I drove! I can’t answer your question about Tidal because I’ve never used it. I’m using Amazon HD and Qobuz and there are several differences between the two. As an all around product, Qobuz is the best. Amazon has some quirks, but had an easy to use software. Anyway, if you’re listening through your phone to your truck radio, you are probably not going to hear much difference between any of the services, as long as you’re streaming CD quality or better. Does Spotify still stream at 128 MP3?

@pjw81563

I had a Sony Walkman and graduated to some no name mp3 players.  That 710 is a huge step up!

Enjoy the music.

Oscar Peterson starts the morning. Currently playing is A Time For Love. Live in Helsinki, 1987.

Excellent live recording.

@pjskeleton

I agree, Jackie’s Bag is excellent!  It might even be in the desert island pile.

RIP Wayne Shorter.

Man I would have loved to have seen him in the sixties!

Or with Weather Report in the Seventies!

Speaking of Wayne Shorter, I was  listening to Weather Report last night.

RIP

Anyone else love Tardo Hammer?  Listening to Look, Stop & Listen and it’s just great.

@pjw81563

I’m glad you had a good time and I’m glad things are getting back to normal. Last weekend, we went and saw a three piece band. They were okay, but never gonna go platinum 😉

Listening to Charlie Haden - Jim Hall, Live From The Montreal International Jazz Festival (1990)

Weather Report,  The Legendary Live Tapes - 1978-1981.

Tasty stuff

RIP Wayne Shorter.

@pjw81563

Great find!

I have the vinyl and CD’s and have never enjoyed this video before!

RIP Wayne Shorter.
