Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

Happy Valentine's day, boys!

Happy Valentine's day, Rok!
I was listening Latimore more than several times today and will still. Either you know how to aim deep or we are simply on the same level. Not that important but coincidentally and not that long ago I was in a "role" of a man from this song so I'm experiencing it in more intensive way. This is not the first time that you match with a song that what happens currently in my life. I like the feeling.
Thanks for asking. My area is ok, but there are 20,000 other people in this city without power. Still iced in.
I wanted to ask the same. Have just seen it on the news. Can't believe this is actually happening.

I am glad you are fine.

So I do not have to cut down some trees and send them over to you to warm you up?
I blew the punchline. Nothing worse! It’s that second language thing 🤔. Otra vez:
I have just spent an hour trying to figure out what was that, you were trying to tell me. :---)

By the way, that video should have had the subtitles. Or when I think again, maybe better not. :---)
MJ, if you have time, would you please hunt down a YT clip or two of the way you love to hear Texans talk. Just so we're on the same page - it's tough to spell it out!
Actually, when I was searching for something like that, I found this:

:--)))))

Where are my manners. It's Saturday Night in Croatia, and no blues posted yet!!
My point exactly! And they say you are the men with manners so would you be so kind and follow the given instructions. I mean, the facts.

;--)
Back to jazz. I like Today's Listen. In time for good night sleep. My earbuds are on.

Good night@

Don't you make too much noise guys, I am light sleeper!
I like Brother John...

I did some research on the song...

From the book

Nothing living should ever be treated with contempt. Whatever it is that lives, a man, a tree, or a bird, should be touched gently, because the time is short. Civilization is another word for respect for life...

Jazz players are special.

What would you have to do to make a jazz musician feel bad about their playing?

Absolutely nothing.

Veeeeryyy nice, that is THE sound. Similar to this one you posted recently
https://youtu.be/aR1xWY1bP1E which I also like.

Have you ever been in a field of the almond trees in the blossom? It brings smile on the face, as if you breath in and breath out an air full of joy and life. One cannot but smile.

I said last goodbye to my dear old friend, today. Old in heart but so young in age. I stood there, watched the almond trees, I could swear everything was more vivid than usual, bursting with color. Greener. Life.

Few of us gathered there, to remember life. But one of us was not there any more. Somebody said: We should treasure life.

We always remember to say that in the moments like these. So will not moan, although there is even a proper jazz song for moaning.

Will remember the almond tree and me smiling with a friend because that was the most important thing we had. It says everything about our lives. It says who we are.

Za Kraljicu Jazza

It is Saturday night.
Luckily I have rok, who brings smile on my face. Time for music.
Pjw, if I was talking to your best friend, and he sounded a little hoarse, I would think that was the natural way he sounded, and think that he sounded just fine. But you on the other hand would say, "No, he sounded a little hoarse".
:----))) !
What is she saying ? We better ask Frog, he might know.
Noo, that is for Rok.
First time I’ve ever seen him use a capo - I’m sure he did it often, but it’s a novelty for me.
Yep, not usual position. But that’s clearly because of the singer. It lets Paco to adjust the key he is playing in, in order to match with the voice of the singer better, otherwise he would have to play (meaning learn to play) the piece, transposed in another key.

Capo lowers the action on the guitar (by pressing the strings more near to frett board), sometimes making the playing harder. Anyway, Capo is so dam* practical.

********
And thanks inna. It is always nice to listen the master of the guitar.
It’s Saturday! But nobody is at the disco, omg, what shall I do with my brand new dancing shoes:

https://youtu.be/JdXecuVl7_4
Dancing is like making love with yourself when everybody else is watching you. This does not apply when you dance with somebody else of course. Because in that case you make love with your dancing partner while everybody else is watching you. When I was younger, I wanted to be a dancer. Funny how life "brings you down", ’cause the older you get, the less audience you need and life is dancing mostly around you, instead of you, dancing around.
Good Grief, if you weren't thinking on actual goose, I have just googled it.

"What is the point of goose stepping? In a standard goose step, found in large military parades, the pace is done at a quick march and the leg is raised only to knee-height, or even to calf height. The lower goose step improves balance and unit cohesion at the tempo of a quick march."

Something like this?

Paco:

Are we suppose to laugh or cry?? A lot of notes, saying absolutely nothing.
What's wrong, dear? Your shoulders are so tight (standing near and making the gentle massage), surely too much computer time...Let me make you some tee (just in case I have plastic cups too). Green or black? Tea I mean...
Anyway, it is 4 am in the morning here, have to get back to sleep. Good night frog!
I’ll take that blind test any day of the week.  Actually, I have on a couple of occasions and have proven the point.

Well, I do not want to question your sayings but you haven't written that you actually did a blind test with 7000 usd worth cable. Comparison between 100 usd and 1000 usd or even 2000 usd I do understand.
You have no idea how caves are terrible. I need so many blankets to adjust the sound, meaning to absorb it at some points. :---)

I wonder why Alex haven’t posted about this to tell me, among other things, how wrong I am.

My point is, again, that after some level, it tends to get funny with the gear price. Meaning the cable thing.

Here in Croatia, the pizza restaurant with the golden pizza has recently opened. Yep, pizza with gold. Maybe that cable is covered with gold too.
I can't draw line, I am talking about extreme prices. Me not judging either, production must never stop. :---) I did have a chance to listen music on the expensive systems (not mine) but did not ask for the price...
Up to certain amount, there is the difference.

You ask for very expensive ones? Well, little less noise surely, but the ear that would actually notice that there is the difference - does not exist.

A way to get more money out of people, for sure.

On my cable question, those were the part of the answers from a person with high knowledge in many areas including math, physics...

It is not that simple, that is true. And I can understand the price of 1000 but 7000? Blind test, please.
Out of curiosity, have you ever heard a great, intelligently assembled audio system?
Nope, I live in a cave, therefore never heard of it.
One day I was playing a Sonny Rollins album at realistic volume with the windows open, and my neighbor later asked if I played sax (which he does).
keegiam! Lowdy, Lowdy....

Please read the instructions:

Human Hearing:

Compared to the other species of Class Mammalia, Humans can’t hear Jack!!!

They can’t ’hear’ Lions and other big cats moving towards them in the grass. Can’t see or smell them either. When it comes to the senses, we are pathetic!!

If it weren’t for other mammals that CAN hear, see and smell, we probably wouldn’t be here today. When they alerted, at least we had the good sense to run when they ran.

Enter, ’Audiophiles.’ Now we can ’hear’ the difference between a tone at 12000 hertz, and one at 12001 hertz. Wow, must be that evolution thingy.

A Joke, sort of:
An "audiophile" is on an African Safari. During a break, he falls asleep in the grass while soaking up some sun. He is awaken by the sound "Mee-ow, Mee-ow." He thinks "kitty cat." He is an "audiophile," so he knows his sounds. So he raises up and SEES a full grown male Lion coming his way. Every few steps, the cat stops and goes, Mee-ow, Mee-ow.

Whatcha gon do?  Believe your lying eyes, or your "audiophile trained ears?"

A music lover, or any other normal person will say. "holy s**t, followed by "footes don’t fail me now"

An "audiophile" will clap his hands and say very loudly, "Here Kitty, kitty, Here Kitty kitty.

That’s why there are so few of them today.

Cheers
Aahah, I almost spit out all my coffee when I saw this, could not stop laughing! National Geographic cartoon on jazz aff. Priceless
Hi guys. :--) Nope, no blackout in Croatia, it is just that I like to check the forum at the end of the day, while I am already in bed, thinking what to dream of and listening your  music. But when I am on the mobile and try to enter this page, there is often the message "Your connection is not private" with bunch of other things, blocking me for actually entering the page (right now also, so I am on comp). Some security matter they say. I guess that my royalty privileges are expired. :--)  Will have to renew the subscription. As I have already noticed many pages ago, it is not easy to have blue blood these days.

I am switching now to my time machine (legacy from my glory days) to see what have you been posted...Hugs to all and kiss to Rok. :--)
:thumbs up:
"Your own sweet way" is definitely awesome song in every way.
BTW Marija what do you think of the late pianist Lyle Mays?

Do you like his large catalog of composing and recording collaborations with guitarist Pat Metheny or the more straight ahead jazz music that, IMHO, he did not make enough of the latter sessions?

pjw

Big yes to this:
Lyle Mays - Stella By Starlight
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPHXXKgGX8c

or to this:
Lyle Mays - Close To Home (Mars)

But no to what you have posted where he collaborates with guitarist Pat Metheny...Can't find myself there, it leads me in two completely separated directions.
Good morning! Morning here, so I guess everywhere.

The sun shines, birds are singing under my window. Today is the plan to set some nice food on the garden table to attract some interesting flying creatures. And then, when they set their tiny feet on the improvised perch, I will shoot them. With camera of course.

Thank you pjw and ac. :--)

I am deep into bird's world now.

Birdist Rule: Use Your Voice To Attract Birds
https://www.audubon.org/news/birdist-rule-77-use-your-voice-attract-birds

I think my neighbours will go mad.

If I do not manage to attracted them, maybe the music you posted will. You never know what kind of aficionado is hiding among them. ;--)
’Sweet and Lowdown’ directed by Woody Allen from 1999.
Can’t remember anything from it. Is it possible that I did not see it? (Please spare me your kind of irony here. :--)) I have watched so many Woody’s movies. But where suppose I should watch it?
Obviously, we all have different tastes, but seriously, there is a huge difference between saying one doesn’t like a style of playing and saying “he can’t play”. I think it’s important to separate the two things before making grand statements like that which can easily be disputed by objective (yes, objective) criteria which define a music.
well said, fro
That's great. I imagine I am in a bar. The light is low, music is on, she hits just the right note...
