Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

Why can't we live together? An idea that came and went; the current prevalent thinking is to stay "Locked and Loaded"

That's Sad(e). Couldn't agree more O-10.
pjw, I like those cuts and find them veery special. James Carter is lately quite often present in my daily music schedule.

He is a technical virtuoso and, IMHO, the best sax player alive today.
You mean after fro? ;-)
acman, thank you for the songs. You are so lucky for having the opportunity of hearin' alive some great artists. It's a privilege that we rarely, if at all, have here. I have to envy you know. :-)
alex man, that was some pretty heavy blues you posted. You just raised yourself on a "higher musical level" (can be freely interpreted) in my eyes. Thanks for the blues.
I found some in Scottish Gaelic , her native tongue and to my ears , the most beautiful one in the world .
Beautiful voice, thank you.
Should I participate WWII debate? Better not.

Mary Joe, funny, always thought that Van Halen is your favourite player.
A player is one thing, a song another...

But once I liked this too:

Man, how bizarre and squeaky clean this song looks after the recent thread theme. :--)
If there is a will, there is a way...

John Coltrane, Acknowledgement
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qagOblqhBhk

"Here’s another superb instrumental track, this time from the jazz saxophonist lovingly known as Trane. Somewhat of a musical odyssey, Acknowledgement forms the first part of the artist’s four-track magnum opus entitled A Love Supreme.

Drenched with emotion, this expressive, beautiful record skitters along intensely – representing the artist’s personal struggle for purity. On a technical level, it’s also perfect. Created as a deeply spiritual piece of work, Coltrane’s avant-garde styling set an indomitable precedent for not only jazz, but artistry in general." ~ source pure.com

Have a good weekend guys.
Attacking Russia, as I stated in my original post, was their biggest mistake. For all intents and purposes Germany lost the war on 22 June 1941 although it took 4 more years.

...

Adolf Hitler had predicted that Russia would fold and Germany would win by the end of September. Adolf Hitler was wrong. He and his intelligence staff underestimated the Soviet Unions strength in man power and industrial capacity.

The Soviet Union continued to "grow" army’s and stack them in front of the Germans.

...

We all are in debt to the Soviet Union which bore the brunt of the full might of the German Army and bled them white before we landed on Normandy on 6 June 1944 to open the second front.
True.
Life is too short and there are very few people here already, it would be shame if we destroy such a fragile coexistence between very different people and peronalitys.
Mojih pet para na tu temu....
Care...
Guys, are you following the news from Europe? Germans are investing in Auschwitz. Not good.

While you saw them in that neighborhood, and it’s possible to have seen a Lamborghini in that neighborhood, it didn’t belong to a "welfare recipient", a dope dealer most likely; he’s someone who couldn’t make it on Wall Street and chose the Black mans path to riches.
O-10. I think noone not even for a moment had a thought those cars actually belonged to any of the poor ones. The fraud in as you call it "welfare" certainly do exist but that does not mean that welfare should cease to exist as such (this sentence is actually for rok, not for you). I strongly support the system which will provide the basics (health insurance, roof over head, education...) for the most needed ones. But it’s the system again, if there is a will for it, that should secure the distribution of those supporting funds according to the written law. It is other pair of shoes if system allows the existance of grey zones where black welfare market blooms and fraud occurs.
I want to thank all the people for their off topic comments. Without them I would have never known that people are selfish and will manipulate others for power and wealth.
This is good one. Cheers to that.
Anthonyyyyyy Joshuaaa, howls the Buffer, the ring announcer. Pjw, I bet I know where you were an hour ago.
Dangerous man that Ruiz guy, with a body shape of an armored combat vehicle. Short, massive, able to withstand the damage for a long time. I bet it’s hard to take down such a boxer. Imo, the mistake was done when he "decided" to wait for his chance in the match. Instead, should have tried to win over somewhere at the middle. Did not stand a chance on a long run against Joshua, the distant and highly cautious box dancer. Playing on points obviously ain’t his style.

Thank you for the cut. I like that particular repeated pattern of movement and when guitar is involved, than even more.

For you and in the spirit of today’s event:

Looking forward to the third match, for which I doubt it will happen.
pjw, privilege would be mine. As of boxing, hate to disappoint you but as a typical female, I fear for each candidate of being severely injured. That’s the part in which I do not quite enjoy. In what I enjoy is the way of fight - what tactic each of the boxers shows, are they able to adapt the challenge, did they estimate the opponent well, can they wake up and return to the match after they’ve been declared dead and other, similar stuff. Girlish, I know. Baj d vej, that last link of yours, the lyrics which capture brutally (it matches well with boxing) the picture of the relationship among couple, that’s almost blues, meaning that was good.
On recent great Gene Harris links.
I like when you post jazz instead talking about politics since you are obviously much more familiar with jazz. :p ;--)
pjw, thanks to you, I did a research on the subject. Indeed, a huge tragedy, first for the Benny the Kid, his family and afterwards for Emilie himself.
Thank you for all the info.

Lessons learned from Griffith v Paret III continue in the sport to this very day but are a stark reminder of a situation escalating in a split-second and just how dangerous the sport can become between two warriors. ~ source WBN, World Boxing News

Russians again, can’t open any link. But titles are great, I really enjoyed.
One I used to sing to my kids.
Please confirm us that this is you on this video, lol.
I’ve decided to wade into the political comments.
Great sketch. You should continue wading.
On Christmas subject

- Jesus is watching you

Today I had a conversation with a 10 year old boy who could not stop telling jokes. I left amazed with his ability to interpret jokes so well and at his age. We were laughing I think 1 hour without stopping and here is one of the jokes, that I can remember. Thought some of you might like it:

Late one night, a burglar broke into a house he thought was empty. He tiptoed through the living room but suddenly he froze in his tracks when he heard a loud voice say: "Jesus is watching you!"

Silence returned to the house, so the burglar crept forward again. "Jesus is watching you," the voice boomed again.

The burglar stopped dead again. He was frightened. Frantically, he looked all around. In a dark corner, he spotted a bird cage and in the cage was a parrot.

He asked the parrot: "Was that you who said Jesus is watching me?"

"Yes", said the parrot.

The burglar breathed a sigh of relief, and asked the parrot: "What’s your name?"

"Clarence," said the bird.

"That’s a dumb name for a parrot," sneered the burglar. "What idiot named you Clarence?"

The parrot said, "The same idiot who named the Rottweiler Jesus.

Enjoy the day...
pjw, it’s always nice to read you. I hope you are doing fine.

If I may say so, I am quite picky concerning "free jazz" and listen only specific pieces in that style. When it comes to jazz, prefer being "limited". :--)

Laughing here. Don’t worry Your Highness, I won’t attack Croatia. Not that they don’t deserve it, but out of respect for the Queen of Jazz.

:--)) You are merciful in almost a royal way.

Today, a guest made me cry. Either I was really moved or were those days in month. However, actual clients at work we refer as guests, because once they come to enjoy their boat, we treat them as our guests. Anyway, he is very kind person, a journalist, a biologist and musician. He plays sax, guitar and piano (!), so he sent me his music recorded on YT. It is very nice music and it would have been nicer if he hasn’t, many years ago, became ill and ended his career. Life sucks. Music is too beautiful to be stopped.

I am a big movie collector myself and some of the greatest releases are black and white.
Alex, this is your subject too.
After sobering up, members read what they have written, then delete it.
Lol again.

This thread is good.

I need a break...

All together now,  "THANK YOU BLUE NOTE"!!!!

Should we clap our hands?

:--)
fro, I think the same but If I am not mistaken, Alex wrote somewhere about "hating" clips without title so...it was kind of on purpose from my side...

Betty Carter:

Her version of "Favorite Things" is now one of my favorite things. I liked all three songs.  You have to 'listen' to her music.  I would imagine it's not easy to play in the group backing her.

Anyway, I wanted to say something similar to what many of you have already said. Daring lady she is for sure. Somebody commented under her Favourite Things clip: „she is kneading that popular song like it's pizza dough“

Still laughing here.

In other words, “cool”; as distinguished from the harder edged, grittier and generally more aggressive quality of Hard Bop which was and is more prevalent in the East Coast.
That's why it is "cool."
No success on the movie soundtracks; kind of hard to find a soundtrack when you don’t remember the movie, never the less, what I found is pretty good.
Precisely my point O-10.

Alex, I forgot to ask you and can’t find it anywhere here but I know you posted it before. Movie soundtracks, ’70s? Anyway, you know what I like, can you please resend it somewhere again?

I am thinking what to write to make Texas man, little bit angry... :p ;--)

''I started to change my material to keep the musicians interested,'' Ms. Carter said in a 1992 interview with The New York Times.

The point.

Ms Dozier reminds me of another quirky singer, Betty Carter .

Thank you acman for Betty Carter. She seems to be quite original with the way she expresses herself, for which I admire her.

Ms. Carter sounded like no one in jazz, with her own diction, her own phrasing and her own sense of pitch. ~ source nytimes.com

Speaking of PCs, anyone still running windows 7?  Do we have to get win 10?
I have heard that Windows 95 are the best...

What I seek is seeking me...It is just that we play little bit of hide and seek in between.
