Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

I am sure things are better there.
Mary_jo, this is the first time I've heard Julia Lee; I really enjoyed her songs, will order some. Her use of the "double entendre" is most interesting.
I am glad you like her singing 0-10. With the cheerful voice and phrases that are often subject to various interpretations, she surely brings smile on the face of the appreciative listener. Interesting to know is that she was known as "dirty blues" musician. :o
DJ hasn't come? I think I have spoiled him. I'll fire him. CD player will do on it's own.
Hi guys! Love to read you, as always. But can't participate that often, I have a lot on my mind at this moment. One is a need for a better guitar that haunts me for quite a while and I am in crusade for buying new one. Checked most of the respective music stores in my country but among some strong brands, only one captured my attention so wanna go further in the search. Currently abroad in Slovenia, sittin' on the dock of the bay (meanin' in a small coffe shop, heavy rain outside), somebody here has a good taste in music 'cause currently is playing

I just wonder how far will I go...

Deus vult.

Regards to all.

p.s. Donno where Alex is. Probably hiding somewhere ha ha...but he is probably following the thread and will pop out eventually, when least expected. :--)) ;--)
Apropos of what you've been lately discussing; lyrics vs. no lyrics, I find tremendously interesting, the quote from Claude Debussy:  “Music is the silence between the notes.”

Thank you all for beautiful songs.

****I might have to go to a psychiatrist to get this curse removed.****

This could be good time to visit Marie Laveau’s ancestors. I am sure that some of them inherited some useful powers...

I understand italian but not that good and from some reason I need not to undrestand all words in this song. Does that mean that words could be surplus here?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KPrf-svWUAQ

But how would I react on this song if I haven’t heard it with lyrics before?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xixFY8v4Nmg

Does right question ever has firm answer? Right question raises another question...

So many of your good thoughts, I could contemplate on each of them.

About the closings. Imo, closings are good, healthy but also dead. Healthy dead - meaning that’s easier way of dealing with things (sometimes highly appreciated but that is not the point here). You finish with it and walk away for good. The harder way: A seed of life planted in closing - to give the chance for a new type of closing sometime in the future. Desirably an improved one. ’Cause things change. We change. What they told you about the wolf, his coat and his disposition concerns only the animal world. Like to think we are more than an animal. Well, mostly.

On lyrics. I used to liked songs with lyrics. Actually, those were the only one I liked. Words were far important to me than any melody. Now I rarely listen the songs with lyrics. It is not because I do not like the lyrics but it’s because that in this case I find singer failed in performance in some way. If the job is done right, lyrics and music should be melted - You hardly notice when the singer started singing or when the singing ended. If the job is not done right, either one or another stands in front of other, jumping out from the railway, preventing me from enjoying the song in full. I also think that somewhere the lyrics in song are surplus. The same as sometimes the spoken words are surplus - there is simply no need for them.

Do you need words in the song like this, my all time favourite... I envy no rock guitarist as much as I envy the ones in classic. The purity of each note made on the guitar and high discipline is never so required as in classic guitar.

No words required...

But this song I can’t imagine without Billie’s voice. All melts perfectly:

Oh, this means that it is time for commercials...

For some other parts of conversation, well...Monthy Python said it best...
I am not friendly type of the person but again, I have a friend, it's she this time, who always look at the bright side of life.

Too much brightness hurts eyes. She handles that with the glasses. Rose colored ones.
"Please, cry in your bear with memories of long lost love; if you don’t have any beer I’ll send you one of mine. Just don’t claim those "dippy" lyrics are what the song is about because that spoils the instrumental versions of the song for everyone."

This is a bit harsh, don't you think so?
Preacher. What do you mean wrong? Imagine this thread without 0-10 and fro.
I would write mostly about chickens, you would post Sunday songs. They would ban us in a day.
Easy schub. All this would be pointless without both of them. Both of them. Together.
"By definition, a “song” is a musical composition intended to be sung; it has lyrics. A wordless composition is a ”tune”, “instrumental”, or “piece”; which doesn’t become a “song” until lyrics have been added."

You’re right. I thought noone would notice it. It was too late to correct. Thank you for the warning.

"Forgive me if I am mistaken and I don’t mean to take liberties, but I suspect that your feeling about lyrics being unnecessary, for Aranjuez in particular, became stronger as you became a stronger guitarist yourself."

This is interesting point of view. Never thought about it before.

"Many of the great and popular songs played as Jazz instrumentals were written first as wordless tunes and lyrics were added after the fact; or the reverse is true. Any tune is a candidate for lyrics."

True.

The links you posted, that is such a beautiful voice. Still...do I need it here?

Miles knew how to express himself. The quotation says a lot about him.

"German is, objectively, considered a harsh and guttural language..."

Good to see you schubi. Disagree with you for german. It is very beautiful language. One of my favourite.
I do believe the pertinent facts have been established; consequently, I’m declaring a truce and suggest that we get back to the music.
Nope, wait, I have something to say! :--))

I have a close friend, a walking encyclopedia as schubert pointed. The monster knows so much, I mean really knows, ask him whatever you need to know, it’s faster and easier to ask him than Google. You name any field you like, any. Music, literature, philosophy, physics, logic...

Bottom line is that I would like him not to be so perfect all the time. Little bit of weakness, little bit of craziness or even immaturity at some point, would be highly appreciated. :--)

To cut the long story short, fro, you are too perfect. We need you to show us your dark side. Bring it on. ;--)
It is profoundly evil to ask anyone to dream up an evil side for your entertainment !
Schub, you know that I did not mean that. But not to worry, fro will understand.
Somebody mentioned Ornette Coleman? :--)

This is for you:

Comedian George Carlin on aging

Do you realize that the only time in our lives when we like to get old is when we're kids? If you're less than 10 years old, you're so excited about aging that you think in fractions.

"How old are you?" "I'm four and a half!"You're never thirty-six and a half. You're four and a half, going on five! That's the key.

You get into your teens, now they can't hold you back. You jump to the next number, or even a few ahead! "How old are you?" "I'm gonna be 16!" You could be 13, but hey, you're gonna be 16!

And then the greatest day of your life - you become 21. Even the words sound like a ceremony. YOU BECOME 21...YESSSS!!!

But then you turn 30. Oooohh, what happened there? Makes you sound like bad milk! He TURNED; we had to throw him out. There's no fun now, you're Just a sour-dumpling... What's wrong? What's changed?

You BECOME 21, you TURN 30, then you're PUSHING 40. Whoa! Put on the brakes, it's all slipping away. Before you know it, you REACH 50 and your dreams are gone.

But! Wait!!! You MAKE it to 60. You didn't think you would!

So you BECOME 21, TURN 30,  PUSH40, REACH 50 and MAKE IT TO 60.

You've built up so much speed that youHIT 70! After that it's a day-by-day thing; you HIT Wednesday!

You GET INTO your 80's and every day is a complete cycle; you HIT lunch; you TURN 4:30; you REACH bedtime. And it doesn't end there. Into the 90s, you start going backwards; "I WAS JUST92."

Then a strange thing happens. If you make it over 100, you become a little kid again. "I'm 100 AND A HALF!" May you all make it to a healthy 100 and a half!

HOW TO STAY YOUNG

1. Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age, weight and height. Let the doctors worry about them. That is why you pay "them."

2. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down.

3. Keep learning.  Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever, even ham radio. Never let the brain idle. "An idle mind is the devil's workshop." And the devil's family name is  Alzheimer's.

4. Enjoy the simple things.

5. Laugh. Often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath.

6. The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person, who is with us our entire life, is ourselves. Be ALIVE while you ARE alive.

7. Surround yourself with what you love. Whether it's family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge.

8. Cherish your health. If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.

9. Don't take guilt trips. Take a trip to the mall, even to the next county, to a foreign country, but NOT to where the guilt is.

10. Tell the people you love that you love them. At every opportunity!

ALWAYS REMEMBER

Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by moments that take our breath away.

I am glad you like it pjw. Carlin's advices seem simple but...

Since you are hard to please (your words), I’ll play safe and send you what we both like. One of my favorite (of her). Can’t feel this one more deeply than I already do.

For some of us who skipped history class...:p

"The German economist and philosopher Karl Marx is sometimes mistakenly characterized as an egalitarian and a proponent of equality of outcome and the economic systems of socialism and communism are sometimes misconstrued as being based on equality of outcome. "Equality" in a communist society is thus not about total equality or equality of outcome, but about equal and free access to the articles of consumption. Marx argued that free access to consumption would enable individuals to overcome alienation."
***** but about equal and free access to the articles of consumption*****

"What does that mean? And why does it take a communist system to achieve it.

I’ll be as short as possible. And I have no desire to continue discussing this theme. This should be sufficient as the answer:

Definition of Communism. “Communism (from Latin communis, "common, universal") is a philosophical, social, political, and economic ideology and movement whose ultimate goal is the establishment of a communist society, which is a socioeconomic order structured upon the ideas of common ownership of the means of production and the absence of social classes, money, and the state.”

In short: classless, moneyless, stateless.

Fact: It never existed.

Important: Communism is not about people living like in a tribe, going up and down all dressed up the same, smiling the same, sharing the same food, living in the same tents, holding each other with hands, singing age of aquarius and stuff like that. It is about the most modern society you can think of, highly advanced society in modern technologies – it’s the society so advanced and productive (only in societies like this, this can be achievable) that setting up the prices for the goods and paying for them would make no sense. What’s is the point in a price battle or in buying stuff if everyone has all? Example: I am sure that few shoes factories in China for instance (being so damn productive), would already now satisfy the need for all kinds of shoes here in my entire country. They can produce so many shoes that we could easily enjoy in all kinds of them. But nobody will give them to us for free. In fact, if the factory has the production surplus, it will rather destroy the goods than place it on the market with low price or God forbid, give it away for free. Reason is simple, no profit out of that. There is your answer. It is in the earning of the profit and preserving the private interest.

A profit earner obviously does not want that equality in consumption. Thanks to profit, he will be rich as hell, you stay poor and work in the stinky factory, ‘cause somebody has to work for it. You will be brainwashed with all kinds of bullshits, just to be kept away from using your head by thinking of the freedom and better society. And the only freedom that you will have - will be to choose who will exploit and use you. But you will be surely exploited and used. (In a more cheerful way of saying, you will be surely fuc***.).

In the former Yugoslavia, we had the beginnings of this system of equality. We had ideas that where foundations for a system like that. Like nowhere in the world. Of course, that had to be stopped. And it stopped. In a bloody war. We were too greedy and too stupid to preserve what we had and too weak to prevent what was about to happen.

You see, my dear, these ideas of equality are far dangerous than any terrorism. You may kill, rob, destroy, torture other human being, but that’s no biggie in comparison to the existence of the ideas of equality in a modern slave mind.

Now back to turkey theme.

:--))

Mary Jo,  did you write for Borba?

Cheers Comrade

Noo, they are too soft for me. I listen jazz.
The Jazz Queen has the wisdom of Solomon.
Noo. I am child prodigy. I know now exactly what I knew when I was five...

I need a break to make a balance...have just gone again through the songs that you lately posted. O-10, thank you for that, that's nice.

Have just opened "Sonny Rollins - What is His Greatest Challenge?"
but the video refuses to run. Anyone can tell me what's his greatest challenge? Curious to know.
