Is There Just One Single Album That Does It For You, Completely? Just One.

If you somehow got stuck in a situation (lol) and had to spend the rest of your life completely by yourself, all alone, on a desert island ... and, as part of your situation you only got to choose one album to spend the entire rest of your life with.

Let’s say, some weird circumstance, and you also had at your complete disposal the system of your dreams, that you had assembled thru the years. And thank goodness you were a prepper and you thought ahead to install a solar power system, so power would never be a problem either.

Kind of like Tom Hanks on that island, except instead of a just a soccer ball, you had your dream stereo setup and one album only.

One album and that’s it. Got to pick one. Not necesssarily your all time favorite album, just one you could live with for the rest of your life.

Is there any album that just completely does it for ya, on that level?

I’ll kick things off by sharing mine: Steely Dan, Aja

The question of the OP has a meaning ...

Because this question has a meaning it is possible to ask it without being accused to be an alleged victim of a "clickbait" ... We are grown men able to decide to be victims of cigarette, drinking or audio and discuss it without being patronized as irresponsible idiot ....

I already explained how i understand this interesting question , which is not a questions about our taste and favorite album but about what music can be listened as the only music on the hand in an island exiled for life ...

It is a question about  a musical depth content, some inexaustible content which for sure we already know and love ...

For example i think that Mozart Requiem by Hogwood is an absolute masterpiece... I will never pick it as my only musical album for life ...

As i explained i prefer to pick a music with a deep inexaustible content even if it less moving emotionnally than the Mozart requiem ...As Bach art of the fugue  music can be ... Or perhaps all Beethoven quartets  as a compromise between form and emotion ...

The question of the Op is like asking to someone to read only one book for the rest of his life ...

Who will take a romance Harlequin book , or even a classic novel ?

Even Doistoievski could not be up to the task ...And i admired Dostoievsky over most classical writers ...He know what is the soul ... Read the "dream of a ridiculous man" ...Nothing so deep has ever been written before ...It is a short novel by the way ...

The bible or a number theory book are my only choices ...Or the Yi-King ... Guess why ?

We need books to meditate not a linear story; we need music to meditate not simplistic melodies on repeat ...😁

The OP did not ask what is your taste , the OP ask what will resist forever to repeated listenings and which you like for sure ...

People dont get it i think ...

😁

"just ONE".....simply impossible! ...but as mahgister, would be inclined to perhaps a Bach album: Bminor Mass? St. Matthew Passion(Herreweghe coducting)... or an album with Beethoven’s late String Quartets (Brentano Quartet has a beautiful rendition of Op. 132)

I will check the Brentano version ... Mine is Talich ...😊.. I own it but never listened to it because i love Talich ...I had many music i never listened , life is short ... I spend more on books and music than on a audio stereo system by the way ... The opposite of many people...

I think all the guys are thinking about this the wrong way. While hearing the same music over and over again would quickly get old, good cover art would have other uses and could sustain you a while longer. How about Britney Spears - Oops!... I Did It Again.

Exactly right ...

Most people confuse their musical taste about a bunch of tunes with music with inexaustible depth ...

They dont realize that listening FOREVER the Tunes of any pop singers or his music is the definition of the inferno or assured madness ...

Try listening the Bolero of Ravel for one hour .... Try it ... This repeated short melody cannot be borrowed as the only listening on an island which even Ravel hated in this way ...

Almost no musical works will do ...Save those with depth and impossible to get on all aspects  for a very, very long time ...

Save some Bach or Beethoven Quartet or some others genius pieces ... As the 100 transcendental studies of Sorabji ...

My definition of hell is rap music for eternity ...But think about that : it is the paradise for some ...

I concluded that hell and paradise dont exist so much as separated but are together mixed on earth ...

Bach Goldberg by Feltsman incredible spontaneous almost improvised playings after the end of the Soviet empire in his first invitation to Moscow ... A top level Bach lesson in pure joy ...Gould is mannerism compared to it ...

For Strings trio , the Sitkovetsky transcription is a treasure ...

Scriabin by Sofronitsky or Zhukov ...The low cost version of integral by Michael Ponti is the only non Russian version i admired but the sound is horrible ...Try it at low cost if sound matter less than music ... I love him ...This version is unique but does not compared to Sofronitsky, nothing compared anyway ... It takes more than great pianist to play Scriabin, i tried them all 😁 ...

Most great names are unable to play it because the time dimension in Scriabin is indecipherable linearly ... Scriabin dont play in the linear time dimension ...This is why Scriabin is one of the greatest musician adding something that dont exist in Bach ...Schonberg is under Scriabin genius for me not above , but Schonberg too with is mathematical recipe quit linear time ...Scriabin never used a recipe or a formula to create an artificial new world, he created without quitting the human heart with an artefact as Schonberg did ...

Scriabin is like Gesualdo or Purcell , an island of its own ....

@mahgister +1 But which recordings of Bach Goldberg Variations and Scriabin piano sonatas?

The greatest set of concertos ever written ...

I concur with this choice ...

i listened them for 50 years already ...

Bach put to shame all musicians ...Save Beethoven and Scriabin ...

Hmmmm…..ok

Bach, “Brandenburg Concertos”

Not even you ... 😉

It was not about our favorite album...

If it was this thread would have not much interest nor any originality ...

The question is about one or two album for LIFE ...

It is amazing that most people dont realize that the repetition of the same EACH DAY will kill any love by routine listening of a content emptied of any depth by repetition ; most musical albums will not last than a few days, weeks, months ...

So beautiful they could be an album to resist destruction by repetition must have a detph musical content impossible to perceive easily and impossible to exhaust by our melodical immediate knowledge of it ...

For life only Bach did it for me ... It is the single one music i listened all my life at almost each sessions ...I am 72 years old ...😉

Beethoven set of quartet can do it too ....But it is more than one hour ...

The art of the fugue is a diamond and nobody is fatigued to see a complex luminescent diamond one time a day, especially if the diamond cutter cut it with an insurpassable craftmanship ....

Funny how many responders can’t follow directions! It was ONE album! 😹

Bach ,variations Goldberg ... for strings trio version Sitkovetsky

Bach, art of the fugue .. Neville Marriner version

What else?

We cannot listen to something without a deep complex content this amount of time ... Few pop tunes will make us becoming mas everyday ...

Then taste is not enough ... There is much more other music i loved too but nothing compared to these 2 pieces in deep inextinguishable meanings ...

The other possibility are all Beethoven quartets ...Talich version ...

Nothing simplistic melodically or rythmically and harmonically ...

All Scriabin pianos will do too ...😊
