ipad2 to hdmi audio video issues

So if I try and connect my ipad2 via its Hdmi adapter to my projrctor (sony VPL VH1) I get a picture that looks as though a color is missing plus good sound.
I now know this is not due to the reciever being older and built to an earlier hdmi "standard" because my PC laptop works great with a similar setup "display port">dell display port to HDMI adapter>Hdmi cable>Onxyo tx-sr604 av reciever HDMI IN>Hdmi out>hdmicable>Sony vpl-vh1 projector>screen>eyes>mind.
The only difference being the ipad and its hdmi adapter versus
dell latitude E6500 and its adapter
If I run ipad direct to projector I get good picture but no option for digital audio let alone over hdmi.
WHY the bad pic through the ipad setup?
due to hdmi standards perhaps?
I feel like a "simple hdmi "y" cable could give me vidoe straight to projector and sound to reciever and give me a workaround, but havent seen such a splitter that doesnt cost a pretty penny indeed.

The HDMI "handshake" issue is a bit more complicated:

How long is the HDMI cable between your Receiver and Projector?

Are your HDMI cables all designated as "high speed?"

What resolution is the projector set at?

Are you using a 1.4 HDMI 1080P Adapter to the iPad 2?

from HDMI.org:

"Q. What is the difference between a “Standard” HDMI cable and a “High-Speed” HDMI cable?

Recently, HDMI Licensing, LLC announced that cables would be tested as Standard or High-Speed cables.
•Standard (or “category 1”) HDMI cables have been tested to perform at speeds of 75Mhz or up to 2.25Gbps, which is the equivalent of a 720p/1080i signal.
•High Speed (or “category 2”) HDMI cables have been tested to perform at speeds of 340Mhz or up to 10.2Gbps, which is the highest bandwidth currently available over an HDMI cable and can successfully handle 1080p signals including those at increased color depths and/or increased refresh rates from the Source. High-Speed cables are also able to accommodate higher resolution displays, such as WQXGA cinema monitors (resolution of 2560 x 1600)."
