I need help with Ultralink compression bananas

I have a set of cables that I bought from a good fellow here on Audiogon. They came with the Ultralink compression fit banana plugs on both ends. Becuase of the nature of my system I have to replace them on one end with smaller (bodied), in-line bananas. How do I "uncompress" and release the cables from these connectors? Just unscrew the nut at the back end and disassemble? Can this be done without damaging the exposed ends so that I'd have to cut them off and restrip?
