How weak is my Digital link?

I have a Sony CX90ES 200 CD changer with a CAL Sigma II Tube DAC with Mullard CV4004.

Rest of my equipment is:

Merlin VSM-M Speakers
Rogue M120 Tube Mono's
Rogue 99 Magnum Pre-Amp

I also have a Sony SCD775, It was for sale for $125, so I just grabbed it.

How much more would I have to spend to hear a significant difference?

Blueshirt- Bypassing the input selector switch eliminates
a set of contacts in the signal path....ie. the best switch
is no switch.
Kana,

Thanks.

I'm not sure what you mean with regard to bypassing the input switch, what does that do?
Try to find a Cal Delta transport to go with your Sigma
and bag the Toslink for a digital coax or balanced cable.

Once you get a digital inferface you like, bypass the input selector switch on the Sigma.

The Sigma circuit board is very easy to work on, better coupling caps, power supply caps, diodes and resistors will also give you a lot bang for the buck.
Toslink from the CD player to the DAC, Coax from the DAC to the Pre.

Hey for $30, ill try anything. I guess thats why I smoke pot. ;)

Thanks
You're using Toslink, right?

Try switching to a glass toslink cable.
I had a very pleasent experience with a Wirewolrd Supernova III+ toslink. I would go as far as to say that it has been the most norable cable improvement I'v done.

There's another glass tosling selling for 30 bucks on ebay. I bought one to compare with the WW but haven't done so yet.

Thats kinda the truth for most things, but there comes a point of diminishing returns.

My question would be, do I need to spend at least $2k to hear a "big" improvment? $1k? Or are those two component stong enough to hold thier own with and CD player or CD/DAC combo under $1k.
Actually;the sky's the limit. There are many choices--- all for more money,of course.
