We drive a Hegel H30 amp directly with a HD30 DAC and the result is fantastic. However, we haven't tried it with a high end preamp to compare. In my opinion, if running a digital only system, instead of spending the money on a preamp, you can use some of those funds to upgrade the interconnect and power cable.
