Halide DAC mystery

Just purchased above. Use with Mac. This DAC, unlike the DAC I owned before, "defeats" the volume on the Mac. Why is this bad? I can now barely open the volume pot on my integrated before it gets way too loud and I cannot compensate by adjusting the volume on the Mac.

Ideas appreciated. Thanx.
