GoldenEar Center Choices: X, XL, or Reference center
Hi All:
i'm seriously considering the GoldenEar Triton Reference speakers for my front left and front right speakers.
for my center channel, GoldenEar has 3 options: X, XL, or Reference center.
i'm using an Ultra Short Throw projector, the Hisense 120" L9G, so the projector is quite some distance from the wall, but close to the floor (i.e. low), which means the center channel needs to be BELOW the Hisense projector.
The Hisense L9G ultra short throw projector is around 24" wide, so the Reference center at 35" is much wider in size than the Hisense projector. Please note that the Hisense is on the top shelf, with the center BELOW the Hisense. This floorstanding stand will have to be custom made.
considering that the Reference center at 35" is SO much wider than the Hisense projector (at 24" wide), i am thinking of getting the middle size center from GoldenEar, their "XL" center, which is 29" wide, which is merely 2 1/2" wider on either side of the projector. that means the stand would only have to be around 5" wider than a stand made for the projector-only, not that much wider.
may i ask if anyone has experience with these centers please? am i giving up that much by not getting the Reference center and just getting the "XL" center please?

I would get the center channel that has the same size drivers as your front L-R speakers. As for the floor standing stand I highly recommend Mapleshade Bedrock stands. I use three of them in my HT for front left, center and right speakers, They improved the sound in my setup a lot. I know they have stands for center channels but they may not have pics on the website, call or email them. |
@kota1: thanks for your comment. here are the center channel speaker options from the same company (GoldenEar) as the one who makes my front left and front right speakers. any thoughts from any good folks here would be most appreciated. as GoldenEar uses ribbon tweeters, their dispersion is limited. I’m wondering if using a center channel speaker made by another manufacturer might work well too? i mention that because GoldenEar speakers all use a ribbon tweeter, and as such, they have limited dispersion, which is important for the center speaker. can using another company’s center channel speaker with, for example, a dome tweeter be actually a benefit? thank you all in advance. look forward to hearing your thoughts! |
The Triton 1R towers and the Super Center X or XL seem to have the matching 5 inch drivers. I would NOT mix brands in the front 3 speakers. You would choose the larger center channel if you have a very large room, maybe with multiple rows. If you call Golden Ear I am sure they would recommend a good match for your room size. |
