Glanz toners for dummies


Shopping Glanz tonearms and looking at their 9” models which vary in price by considerable amounts. So I’m looking for info and experience with the 9hb and the 900s. What separates them? Specs are nearly identical.

don’t know about the 9 inch versions, but last year i purchased a Glanz MH-1200S for my Sumile Mono cartridge. it’s mounted on my Esoteric T1 turntable as the 3rd arm.

build quality is superb, and it’s easy to install and set up. i’m very happy with it’s performance. not tried the Sumile Mono on other arms, so hard to compare. the Glanz seems neutral and the bass performance and sense of space are top notch.

i’m guessing that the difference between the 1200/1000/900 level and the lower ’B’ models is just the materials, maybe the level of precision. the 1200 is all stainless steel. i recommend you inquire with a dealer about it. here is what the website says about the difference;

Standard grade model. Cost reduction has been achieved through the technical capabilities of an engineer familiar with the characteristics of different materials.

The arm pipe and vertical shaft parts (which greatly influence sound quality) are made from stainless steel.

  • Along the main conduction tube we have reproduced a material close to stainless steel supplement, using brass with a tough chrome plating
  • The fulcrum is strongly supported with radial bearings
  • The inside force canceler, Arm Resting Device and Arm Lifting Device are insulated with ABS resin, and reduces reverberation distortion

i do have some other fine arms in my system, the Glanz seems to be competitive with those, i’m happy with my purchase.

@mikelavigne  thanks. When reading the Glanz site all the copy reads the same. Unfortunately the upper arm is out of reach but still believe the lower arm will be an upgrade over my current arm. I’m looking to run Phasemation and similar carts which seem to favor a heavy arm and I’ve read great things about Phasemation/Glanz combo.

I don't own, but do listen to a MH 1200S regularly on a very well known and experienced in use audio system.

The Tonearm is on a Standalone Mounting Pod, used with a SP10 R.

Cart's experienced to date on the 1200S, are Miyajima and Ortofon, off which the Miyajima has made the most substantial of impressions.

I myself am very wed to the Ortofon Family - Jubilee - Kontrapunkt / Windfeld - Cadenza  Cart's and the Voicing of them.

I also can say the 1200S is a very liberated Tonearm, it gets out of the way, and creates in use, very little perception, if any, as having an influence on the sonic being produced, the voicing of the Cart' mounted does seem to be able to fully manifest.

Some who read this Post, will be of the view, I have not heard the Arm at its best, due to the mounting method. I have not detected anything to suggest the used of a Standalone Pod creates a contaminated signal/distortion that is audible.   

As somebody who has discovered how certain Tonearm Designs/Geometries are able to influence the sonic being produced.

Especially, an influence in relation to the perception of the Tonearm being  constraining to the function of the Cart'. When this perception of constraining is sensed, especially by myself, the discernable presence, has evolved into becoming a repellent and an unwanted detractor.

A Tonearm is now fortunately discovered and adopted for use, which has allowed myself to move away from the unwanted perception of constraining a Cart' in its voicing.

The Tonearm I am using now, has not been compared side by side to the 1200S, but the 1200S does deliver without creating the perception that the Cart's in use are constrained. My familiarity with the Ortofon Cart's on different Tonearms has proved beneficial in my being able to discern where difference are to be discovered and help with my coming to this conclusion.

There is also a interference fit removable Headshell, which connects with a much improved interface and tolerance for tightness of fit, than a typical Bayonet Design.

Even though a little pricey, the Headshell will enable Cart' exchanges when pre mounted onto a Headshell, to occur with little concerns and quite to be speedily completed.

I have also been demo'd a Phasemation EA 350 Phonostage with the Glanz in use with the Miyajima and that was a very memorable encounter.
