Favorite Newly Discovered Female Vocalist

Thanks to Qobuz I can endlessly explore new music and artists. I enjoy female vocalists and I’m always searching for new talent whether Pop, Jazz or Classical.

A few I have discovered and very much enjoy:

Laufey: From Iceland and writes very melodic somewhat old school songs

Eva Cassidy: Amazing voice. Best cover of Over The Rainbow I’ve ever heard. Spellbinding and emotional

Diana Panton: Very silky smooth voice. Enjoy anything she sings

Pamela D’Amico: Wonderful Brazilian singer/Guitarist

Kacey Musgraves: Grammy winning artist who spans pop and country. Her song The Architect is a gem  She’s been singing for a while but I just found her on a recommendation from my granddaughter

Michelle Simonal: Another wonderful singer from Brazil Love her rendition of the 80s song Some People as well as other covers

Sarah Menescal: Also from Brazil and offers wonderful covers. Especially love her cover of Over My Shoulder

Stacey Kent: What a delicate sweet voice. Especially enjoy her covers of So Nice and The Gentle Rain on the Brazilian Sketches Album

Hope you enjoy these artists as much as I do

Oh although not a singer but a Classical Pianist please check out

Yuja Wang: Phenomenal and well recorded by DG especially her newest

The Vienna Recital

Interesting thread as many of the recommended artists have been active for a long time.  It’s nice to see many veterans being "discovered."  Here are some I discovered within the past couple of years, most of whom landed on the music scene in the past 15 - 20 years, and have not been mentioned.  These ladies have "pipes" and don’t sound derivative.  Highly recommended:

  • Julienne Taylor.  Check out "A Time For Love"
  • Gabrielle Cavassa - She has a self-titled release, but check out her performances on Joshua Redman’s "Where We Are" release.
  • Ane Brun - Check out "How Beauty Holds The Hand of Sorrow"
  • Bria Skonberg - Check out "What it Means"
  • Katie Melua -  So much good stuff to choose from, but "Live In Concert" is a great listen.
  • Josephine Cronholm -  Check out "Wild Garden"
  • Halie Loren - Check Out "They Oughta Write A Song"
  • Lori Lieberman - The "veteran" in the group.  Check out "Truly"

Here are two I forgot to include earlier:

  • Cecile McLorin Salvant - Check out "Dreams and Daggers"
  • Dominique Fils-Aime - Check out "Nameless"
