Hi,
I own a pair of Confidence 5. I got them 15 years ago second hand. I also love them very much.
My friend also owns a pair but they really sound different in his room. He drives them with Nagra PMA monoblocs (200 Watts in 8 Ohms) and because of his room and speaker placement, they really lack the bass.
I drive them with a Hegel H30 amplifier (675W in 4ohms with a very high damping factor). I have more placement option than my friend has and the bass is sometimes abyssal… of course the room has a lot to do with it but nevertheless this speaker can really go down low, not with lots of power but you certainly can feel the potential of that bass, like you said, being so fast and controlled.
Not long ago, I purchased a set of Isoacoustics Gaia 2 isolation feet to decouple the speakers from my wooden floor and to control resonances in the speaker. The result is amazing; yes I lost some of the deep bass pleasure (created by the room/speaker interaction) but I gained so much in reproduction fidelity - I got closer to the full extent of what this wonderful speaker is capable of in terms of timber, upper bass and lower midrange impact (without the disturbancy that blurred their reproduction). Soundstage, image, focus, details like echos never heard before….
I was going to purchase a sub in a near future but those Gaias will precipitate this addition soon.
I am considering 2 options: REL S510 and Dynaudio sub 6.
Communicating with REL about my system and room size, they suggested to pair my Confidence with 2 sub S510. Unfortunately, I don’t have space for two subs so I would have to settle for one. According to them they would be a good match for my room size (15’ x 30’ with some openings on other rooms) and the speed of the Confidence. The other thing I like about it is its high impedance input giving me the ability to connect it in parallel with my speakers.
The Dyn Sub 6 seems to be a very good option (quality, speed and very very deep bass ) but I don’t like the idea of purchasing long balanced cables going from my preamp to the sub and back to the poweramp adding processing to the signal, to take advantage of its DSP… I could also connect it with the sub out of my preamp but I am eventually considering getting rid of this preamp to go full digital with a dac that includes volume control…
So, not shure a 100% but I think I would go for the REL S510 sometime in 2024.
Communicate with REL via email, give them a quick overview of your system and room size and they will advise for your best option.
Hope this helped.
