Eminent Technology ET-2 Tonearm Owners

Where are you? What mods have you done ?

I have been using these ET2's for over 9 years now.
I am still figuring them out and learning from them. They can be modified in so many ways. Bruce Thigpen laid down the GENIUS behind this tonearm over 20 years ago. Some of you have owned them for over 20 years !

Tell us your secrets.

New owners – what questions do you have ?

We may even be able to coax Bruce to post here. :^)

There are so many modifications that can be done.

Dressing of the wire with this arm is critical to get optimum sonics along with proper counterweight setup.

Let me start it off.

Please tell us what you have found to be the best wire for the ET-2 tonearm ? One that is pliable/doesn’t crink or curl. Whats the best way of dressing it so it doesn’t impact the arm. Through the spindle - Over the manifold - Below manifold ? What have you come up with ?

Picked up two of the medo pumps and pleased to see they are 50/60Hz, so proposing to run them in parallel off a step down transformer, as our mains supply is 230v. There was a suggestion to run two pumps out of phase with each other. What should I do with the earth wires, or should I leave them unconnected?
Any other advice for using these pumps greatly appreciated.

Hi Chris/Dover

Thanks for that information very helpful.

I have an ET2 with original low pressure manifold so I think 12 to 15 PSI if anything may be too high. The original pump did not like 50Hz, managing typically less than 4PSI.

Have filters and a pressure gauge, but not sure what a "regulator" is and locally what industry would be the best source for a suitable unit.

As the pumps are 115V, 50/60Hz I briefly considering running the two pumps in series, one "out of phase". I thought better to run them off a step-down transformer in parallel. Pumps would be housed inside a baffled box so effectively double insulated and isolated from one another, with the surge tank also housed in the same box.

For the surge tank I was going to use PVC pipe and fittings (2 - 300mm lengths of 200mm dia pipe with sealed end caps). Any advice on packing, was going to try some left over "BATTS".

Am I on the right track?

Many thanks for the advice.

Kind Regards

As a New Zealander I would like to apologies for the behavior of Dover. It is a narrow country and this breeds narrow mindedness.

When I look at the pictures of RK's arm I do not see an ET2. It is something specifically crafted and tuned to his system. It is not a universal tonearm. A little bit like the highly modified ET1 that Lloyd Walker uses actually.

Nor for that matter is the ET2 a universal tonearm, as I can attest to from my experience of its truly poor performance in my system. Quite frankly it was clearly out performed by my humble G707 and has remained in the closet ever since.

Now that I am in the process of moving on from my LP12, I will give the ET2 a second chance. In doing this I will be applying a great deal of good advice from Dover, but when Richard gets off his backside and makes a decent new tonearm, you can bet I will be dumpster diving out the back of his place to score the discarded bits from his current arm.

What Bruce has created is a truly outstanding achievement, but here is the rub, in everything I have done with hifi, at no stage have measurements, be it mechanical, electrical, or acoustic, ever done anything but get me in the ballpark. Was is Saul Marantz who has been quoted as saying: "If it measures good and sounds bad, it is bad and if it measures bad and sounds good, you are measuring the wrong thing."

To get back on topic I will just say this. Neither of these guys have a clue. One uses a 'Japanese DD' turntable and one uses a Heath Robinson 'belt drive'. If they used a real turntable there would be much less of this idler bickering.

Ouch, just bit my tongue. Might have to move to Oz now to avoid getting lynched.

Best Regards

Ha, should have known, but as a vinyl, tube and ESL tragic I do get excited when I hear talk of UFO’s and see glowing spheres. :-)
Damn if I had known you were going to ask him, I would have asked if he thought his MIMC* would be suitable for the ET2?
Just trying to get back on topic.
Oh and my best cartridge (ignoring the Koetsu I am too scared to use!) is a beautiful piece of Peter’s work, an SS ruby cantilever re-tipped Supex SD900.
Thanks for checking and cheers
