Ella

Going through all of her American Songbook recordings. Desert island stuff. Also comparing it to Frank, Louis, Jimmy Scott. What a difference. She captures the lyrics in a much more sublime way. Not so much better as they are unique and wonderful in their own way. But Ella approaches the music through the words much more so than the others. Frank is about his voice, Louis about being part of the band, and Jimmy about the emotion.

Many of Ella’s recordings with just piano accompaniment are great.  However, hard to overlook two with band that are on many “best” lists, “Ella in Berlin” (with quartet) and “Ella and Basie” (big band).  Highly recommended!
With piano only, “Ella and Oscar” (Peterson) is a must have.  The great Ray Brown joins Peterson on the B side of the record.
