I have a FAQ on system gain and what it means. Like all numbers, you still have to give a listen. A noisy circuit with theoretically enough gain will drive you out of the room ... or not ... depending on your tolerance for this sort of thing.
Like effective mass / resonant frequency equations, you'll at least know combinations which absolutely won't work.
