USB 3.0 is compatible with USB 2.0. So, you can plug 2.0 into 3.0 and it will work properly. 3.0 however, gives the designer a lot more power options, up to 100W of power transfer. Here is a good description of USB 3.0 power:

Do USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 use the same power BUS?
Wanting to find out if USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 use the same power BUS for one simple "stop gap" reason until I buy a new server.
I know you are not supposed to have in and out of music files on the same BUS. So, I am wanting to have in on USB 3.0 and out on USB 2.0.
Anyone know for sure if these share the same BUS or not?
