Do I need a Surround Sound Preamp or Processor

I currently have a 2 channel system with a Quicksilver full-function tube preamp. I want to incorporate it into a home theater system as well. I plan to use a seperate amp for the center and rear channels. I would like 5.1 or 7.1 capability with the standards formats (DPL, DD, & DTS). Also, I plan to use a progressive scan DVD player. Do I need a surround sound preamp/processor or will a standalone processor work. Also, I'm open to any equipment recommendations.

Thanks in advance

Another alternative route would be to find a DVD player that has a processor built into it. You could then directly hook the outputs of the DVD directly into an amp and go from there. The DVD player will have complete settings for independent output levels for each channel, etc... While possibly not as versatile as other methods, it could save you some money and another slot on the rack. Sean
